West MacDonnell is a national park in the Northern Territory ( Australia ), 1234 km south of Darwin.

The philibeg or small kilt, also known as the walking kilt ( similar to the modern kilt ) was invented by an English Quaker from Lancashire called Thomas Rawlinson sometime in the 1720s for the use of the Highlanders he and Iain MacDonnell, chief of the MacDonnells of Inverness employed in logging, charcoal manufacture and iron smelting, for which the belted plaid was " cumbrous and unwieldy ".

Antony Patrick MacDonnell, 1st Baron MacDonnell GCSI, KCVO, PC ( I ) ( 7 March 1844 – 9 June 1925 ), known as Sir Antony MacDonnell between 1893 and 1908, was an Irish civil servant, much involved in the administration of India.

In 1895, MacDonnell became Lieutenant-Governor of the Northwest Provinces ann Oudh ( later known as the United Provinces of Agra and Oudh ).

MacDonnell was known to be sympathetic to the cause of Irish Home Rule, and his return to London elicited an offer to join his brother, Dr Mark Anthony MacDonnell, in the House of Commons as an independent nationalist.

The landowners involved formed a group known as the Irish Reform Association, and published the outline of the scheme in a 1904 manifesto ; Lord Dunraven requested that MacDonnell formulate the plan in greater detail.

Sporadic raids into Canada on the eastern frontier provided impetus for a former regimental officer, Lieutenant-Colonel " Red " George MacDonnell, to encroach into New York State and attack Ogdensburg in February 1813.

The origins of the Todd River begin in the MacDonnell Ranges, where it flows past the Telegraph Station, almost through the center of Alice Springs, through Heavitree Gap at the southern end of Alice Springs and continuing on for some distance, passing through the western part of the Simpson Desert, as it becomes a tributary of the Hale River, and eventually flowing into Lake Eyre in South Australia.

While the loss of Burke was a major shock, the defeat of three other CLP sitting members, Sue Carter ( Port Darwin ) Stephen Dunham ( Drysdale ), John Elferink ( MacDonnell ) also posed major problems for the party.
