Afterwards, the colony was ruled by the military, with the senior military officer stationed in Sydney acting as the Lieutenant-Governor of the colony until the arrival from Britain of Major-General Lachlan Macquarie as the new Governor at the beginning of 1810.

After much debate a future campus location was selected in what was then a semi-rural part of North Ryde, and it was decided that the future university be named after Lachlan Macquarie, an important early governor of the colony of New South Wales.

The first task Macquarie had to tackle was to restore orderly, lawful government and discipline in the colony following the Rum Rebellion of 1808 against Governor William Bligh.

To secure a reliable supply of coins, in 1812 Macquarie purchased 40, 000 Spanish dollar coins and had a convicted forger named William Henshall cut the centers out of the coins and counter stamp them to distinguish them as belonging to the colony of New South Wales and prevent them being useful elsewhere.

Macquarie was the greatest sponsor of exploration the colony had yet seen.

Both of these buildings were constructed by Macquarie in defiance of the British government's ban on expensive public building projects in the colony and reflect the tension between Macquarie's vision of Sydney as a Georgian city and the British government's view of the colony as a dumping ground for convicts to be financed as cheaply as possible.

In the Rum Rebellion of 1808, the Corps, working closely with the newly established wool trader John Macarthur, staged the only successful armed takeover of government in Australian history, deposing Governor William Bligh and instigating a brief period of military rule in the colony prior to the arrival from Britain of Governor Lachlan Macquarie in 1810.

Macquarie served as the last autocratic Governor of New South Wales, from 1810 to 1821 and had a leading role in the social and economic development of Sydney which saw it transition from a penal colony to a budding free society.

It was selected as a penal settlement because it was geographically isolated from the rest of the colony but more easily reachable by sea than the other place of secondary banishment, Macquarie Harbour on the west coast, which could then be closed down.

The southern elephant seal is found in the Southern Hemisphere on islands such as South Georgia, Macquarie Island, and on the coasts of New Zealand, South Africa, and Argentina in the Peninsula Valdés, which is the fourth-largest elephant seal colony in the world.

Bigge, the Commissioner of the inquiry into the administration of the colony of New South Wales by Governor Lachlan Macquarie, was appointed the first Archdeacon of Australia while still under the jurisdiction of the Bishop of Calcutta.

In 1813 Macquarie finally managed to established a stable currency in coin that could be retained in the colony.

Birch stated before the commission of inquiry into the state of the colony in 1820 that Kelly had discovered Macquarie Harbour after proceeding along in a boat from Port Davey where they had travelled in the schooner Henrietta Packet.

By 1813, under Macquarie ’ s astute governorship the colony had begun to evolve from a penal settlement to an economic colony, and there was a desperate need to increase the food supply and confirm the existence of lands suitable for the expansion of agriculture and thus economic development.

The European discoverer of the Lachlan River in 1815 was Acting-Surveyor George William Evans, who named the river after Lachlan Macquarie, the Governor of the colony of New South Wales.

Once in New South Wales the book contains graphic descriptions of the life in the penal colony under Governor Lachlan Macquarie shortly after the " Rum Rebellion " of the New South Wales Corps and its coup against Governor William Bligh.

Surveyor Grimes marked out the track from Hobart to Launceston in 1807, and Governor Macquarie followed the route in 1811 when he visited the colony accompanied by his wife.

Macquarie again visited the colony in 1821, when the road was fit for a carriage, but his journal records many different sections, and it was not until 1831 that the first regular coach service was operated by J. E. Cox.

In Australia he worked for the Governor, Lachlan Macquarie, as the colonial architect and became the first notable architect in the colony.

After the success of this project he was emancipated by the Governor of New South Wales, Lachlan Macquarie, and in the role of Acting Civil Architect and Assistant Engineer responsible to Captain J. M. Gill, Inspector of Public Works, went on to build many significant buildings in the new colony.

When Governor Lachlan Macquarie visited Stanwell Park he remarked in 1822 that: " On our arrival at the summit of the mountain, we were gratified with a very magnificent bird's eye view of the ocean, the 5 Islands, and of the greater part of the low country of Illawarra ... After feasting our eyes with this grand prospect, we commenced descending the mountain ... The whole face ... is clothed with the largest and finest forest trees I have ever seen in the colony.

In those days, 2HR operated on 680 kHz with 300 watts of power, and was affiliated with the Macquarie Broadcasting Network.

Only two days after Governor Macquarie dedicated Hyde Park for ' recreation and amusement ' it became the site of Australia's first official horse race meeting organised on 15, 17 and 19 October 1810 by the officers of the 73rd Regiment ( Macquarie's regiment ).

A few of its officers and long-serving privates were transferred to bring Macquarie ’ s 73rd regiment up to near full strength ; around 100 veterans and invalids were retained for garrison duty in NSW.

When Governor Lachlan Macquarie invited emancipists to social functions at Government House, for example, many military officers refused to attend.

In 1808, the recall of the New South Wales Corps, whose officers had benefited most from access to land and imported goods ( thus hopelessly entangling public and private interests ), coupled with the appointment of a new governor, Lachlan Macquarie, in the following year, brought about a greater separation of the private economy from the activities and interests of the colonial government.

This includes a variety of native fish such as the famous Murray cod, trout cod, golden perch, Macquarie perch, silver perch, eel-tailed catfish, Australian smelt and western carp gudgeon, to name a few, and other aquatic species like the Murray short-necked turtle, Murray River crayfish, broad-clawed yabbies and the large clawed Macrobrachium shrimp, as well as aquatic species more widely distributed through south-eastern Australia such as common long-necked turtles, common yabbies, the small claw-less Paratya shrimp, water rats and Platypus.

The coastal strip is traversed by several short but flood-prone and fast-flowing streams and creeks such as Para Creek, Allans Creek, Nostaw Ravine, Jimbob Creek, Mullet Creek and Macquarie Rivulet.

Populations have disappeared from natural breeding areas such as the Macquarie Marshes in northwestern New South Wales.

Some suburbs, such as Adamstown Heights are partly in the City of Newcastle and partly within the City of Lake Macquarie.

Lake Macquarie is home to several prominent coastal suburbs such as Catherine Hill Bay, Caves Beach, Blacksmiths Beach and Redhead.

These expansions — and other plans and policies by Macquarie Bank for airport operations — are seen as controversial, as they are performed without the legal oversight of local councils, which usually act as the local planning authority for such developments.

Castle Hill is well served by private buses such as Hillsbus which provides express services to Sydney CBD, as well as Parramatta, Pennant Hills, Macquarie Park, Baulkham Hills, Rouse Hill, Cherrybrook and Busways, which provides services to Stanhope Gardens, Kellyville, Glenwood, Bella Vista and Blacktown.

These tributaries include the Balonne River ( of which the Culgoa is one of three main branches ) and its tributaries ; the Macintyre River and its tributaries such as the Dumaresq River and the Severn Rivers ( there are two-one either side or the state border ); the Gwydir River ; the Namoi River ; the Castlereagh River ; and the Macquarie River.

Numerous other convict settlements were made in Van Diemens Land, including secondary prisons, such as the particularly harsh penal colonies at Port Arthur in the south-east and Macquarie Harbour on the West Coast.

Below or west of Teepookana, in the last 10 km of the River, extensive silting from the mine tailings that have been carried down from Queenstown, has created such a resource that at least one mining company has in the past proposed the mining of the deposits at the edge of the river, as well as the delta formed out into Macquarie Harbour due to the amount of economically viable materials in the silt.

The reserve is part of the Macquarie Marshes Important Bird Area, identified as such by BirdLife International because of its importance as a breeding site for waterbirds.

Many suburbs now also have pockets of medium density units or town houses, such as Hawker and Holt, Kaleen, Melba, Cook, Macquarie, Scullin and Page.

While in Windsor, Macquarie ordered the main institutions of organised settlement to be erected, such as a church, school-house, gaol and " commodious inn " ( The Macquarie Arms ).

Stations that carry the broadcasts include those owned by Macquarie Regional RadioWorks, Grant Broadcasters and some independently owned stations ( such as 2BS Bathurst ).

In late 2008 the new Dick Smith logo ( designed by Hoyne Design ) and format was rolled out with many Powerhouse stores such as Macquarie Centre and Auburn being rebranded to fit the new unified company logo.

This small and critically endangered reserve, also known as the Macquarie Hospital Bushland ( it is registered as such on the Register of National Estate ), is one of the last remnants of the remaining 0. 5 % ( as at 2007 ) of original and endangered turpentine-ironbark forests on Wianamatta shale soil in Sydney.

The Hawkesbury area towns moved to Greenway from the Division of Macquarie, and lost traditional Labor-voting areas such as Blacktown, Dean Park, Lalor Park and Seven Hills as well as the Liberal-leaning areas of Kings Langley and Seven Hills North.

Consecrated on 11 February 1824, the church was designed by the transported convict architect Francis Greenway during the governorship of Lachlan Macquarie, and is part of the historical precinct of Macquarie Street which includes other early colonial buildings such as Hyde Park Barracks.
