Macrobius Ambrosius Theodosius was a Roman who flourished during the early fifth century.

An enterprising copyist early in the textual tradition appended a copy of the Somnium to a copy of Macrobius's Commentary, but this copy appears to be inferior to the one Macrobius was reading.

In this same period of the early 5th century three other authors of importance to the history of allegory emerged: Claudian, Macrobius and Martianus Capella.

In late antiquity such widely read encyclopedists as Macrobius ( 5th c .) and Martianus Capella ( 5th c .) discussed the circumference of the sphere of the Earth, its central position in the universe, the difference of the seasons in northern and southern hemispheres, and many other geographical details.

The first non-Christian reference to the massacre is recorded four centuries later by Macrobius ( c. 395-423 ), who writes in his Saturnalia:

" Macrobius reports the theological view of Varro that " those who dig out truth more diligently have said that the Penates are those through whom we breathe in our inner core ( penitus ), through whom we have a body, through whom we possess a rational mind.

Macrobius gives the same interpretation of the epithet in his list: " Consivius from sowing ( conserendo ), i. e. from the propagation of the human race, that is disseminated by the working of Janus.

Scholars have attempted to identify him with a Macrobius who is mentioned in the Codex Theodosianus as a praetorian prefect of Spain ( 399-400 ), and a proconsul of Africa ( 410 ).

The order of months in the Roman calendar was January to December since King Numa Pompilius in about 700 BC, according to Plutarch and Macrobius.

The last mention of latrunculi that survives from the Roman period is in the Saturnalia of Macrobius .< ref name =" kowalski ">

Its major literary sources are two almost identical passages, one in Servius ' commentary on the Aeneid ( viii. 363 ) and the other in Macrobius Saturnalia Though Servius mentions that aedes duae sunt, " there are two sacred temples ", the earliest Roman calendars mention but one festival, on 13 August, to Hercules Victor and Hercules Invictus interchangeably.

Macrobius ' Commentary upon Scipio's Dream was known to the sixth-century philosopher Boethius, and was later valued throughout the Middle Ages as a primer of cosmology.

The antithetical quality of the two epithets is meant to refer to the alternation of opposite conditions and is commonly found in the indigitamenta: in relation to Janus, Macrobius cites instances of Antevorta and Postvorta, the personifications of two indigitations of Carmentis.

Further, Cameron points out that during his lifetime Macrobius was referred to as " Theodosius ", and looking for that name Cameron found a Theodosius who was praetorian prefect of Italy in 430.

He is known to have written his works around the same time as Lucius Pomponius, who also wrote Atellanae Fabulae ; Macrobius makes reference to him as a very well-esteemed writer whose atellaniolae (" little Atellans ") found a receptive audience.
