At the end of the 15th century some outlines of the mountain may possibly have been painted by Leonardo da Vinci into the background of the Madonna of the Rocks or other pictures.

The Virgin of the Rocks ( sometimes the Madonna of the Rocks ) is the name used for two Late Renaissance paintings by Leonardo da Vinci, of the same subject, and of a composition which is identical except for two significant details.

In her 1967 book ( published in English in 1985 ) Angela Ottino della Chiesa cites four paintings derived to some degree from The Virgin of the Rocks: the Holy Family and St. John by Bernardino Luini in the Prado in Madrid, the Thuelin Madonna by Marco d ' Oggiono in the Thuelin collection in Paris and the Holy Infants Embracing by Joos van Cleve in the Capodimonte Museum in Naples.

Some paintings examined for their unusual choice of imagery include the two versions of Madonna of the Rocks and The Last Supper.

Picknett concurs with other Davinci experts in that Davinci repeatedly adds a pointed finger ( usually pointed towards the sky ) as an homage / reference to John the Baptist ( see the original " Madonna of the Rocks " in the Louvre, " The Last Supper ", and " the Adoration of the Magi ").

Paintings that have been marouflaged include the Louvre's version of the Madonna of the Rocks and many of Turner's canvasses in the care of the Tate Gallery.

The Madonna of the Yarnwinder ( Madonna dei Fusi ) is a subject depicted by Leonardo da Vinci in a painting begun in 1499 or some time later.

The Madonna of the Carnation is the only painting of Leonardo da Vinci in a German gallery.
