The Magi (;

The Adoration of the Magi ( anglicized from the Matthean Vulgate Latin section title: A Magis adoratur ) is the name traditionally given to the Christian subject in the Nativity of Jesus in art in which the three Magi, represented as kings, especially in the West, having found Jesus by following a star, lay before him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh, and worship him.

In Spain and some Latin American countries, Epiphany day is called El Día de los Reyes ( The Day of the Kings ), i. e., the day when a group of Kings or Magi, as related in the second chapter of the gospel of Matthew, arrived to worship and bring three gifts to the baby Jesus after following a star in the heavens.

In as much as patients can throw themselves into the nervous sleep, and manifest all the usual phenomena of Mesmerism, through their own unaided efforts, as I have so repeatedly proved by causing them to maintain a steady fixed gaze at any point, concentrating their whole mental energies on the idea of the object looked at ; or that the same may arise by the patient looking at the point of his own finger, or as the Magi of Persia and Yogi of India have practised for the last 2, 400 years, for religious purposes, throwing themselves into their ecstatic trances by each maintaining a steady fixed gaze at the tip of his own nose ; it is obvious that there is no need for an exoteric influence to produce the phenomena of Mesmerism.

In the late sixteenth-century, Philip II of Spain acquired many of Bosch's paintings, including some probably commissioned and collected by Spaniards active in Bosch's hometown ; as a result, the Prado Museum in Madrid now owns The Adoration of the Magi, The Garden of Earthly Delights, the tabletop painting of The Seven Deadly Sins and the Four Last Things, the The Haywain Triptych and The Stone Operation.

His fabulous wealth was demonstrated by his emerald scepter ; his holiness by his descent from the Three Magi.

The Chapel features the world's largest fan vault ceiling ; twenty-six large stained glass windows, twenty-four of which date from the sixteenth century ; and Peter Paul Rubens ' painting the Adoration of the Magi as an altarpiece.

The number of figures in many standard religious scenes is greatly increased ; the Magi have large retinues, and the Crucifixion often becomes a crowded event.

Among his best works are St Sebastian ; the Four Evangelists at Florence ; Christ Breaking the Bread ; the St Cecilia at the Organ ; an Adoration of the Magi in the National Gallery, London ; the St. Catherine Reading and St Andrew praying before his Crucifixion ( 1646 ) in the Palazzo Pitti.

The pulpit has five reliefs: the Annunciation and Nativity ; the Adoration, the Dream of the Magi and the Angel warning Joseph ; the Massacre of the Innocents ; the Crucifixion ; and the Last Judgement.

Moses ' birth is announced to Pharaoh by Magi ; the child is threatened and rescued ; the male Israelite children were similarly put to death by an evil king.

Adam and Eve, the Visitation, the Adoration of the Magi, the Massacre of the Innocents, the Agony in the Garden, Christ before Pilate, Christ carrying His Cross, and ( this alone having been marred by restoration ) the Assumption of the Virgin are leading examples in the scuola ; in the church, Christ curing the Paralytic.

Greek magos itself is derived from Old Persian maguŝ from the Avestan magâunô, i. e. the religious caste into which Zoroaster was born, ( see Yasna 33. 7: " ýâ sruyê parê magâunô " = " so I can be heard beyond Magi ").

Among apologetic writings was the Ad quaestiones magorum ( 429-436 ), now lost, in which he justified the Old Testament sacrifices as alternatives in opposition to the Egyptian idolatry, and exposed the fables of the Magi who worshiped the elements ( Church History v. 38 ).

Known for his compositions of amusing genre scenes ( also called bodegones ), such as Old Woman Frying Eggs, his sacred subjects include Adoración de los Reyes ( 1619, The Adoration of the Magi ), and Jesús y los peregrinos de Emaús ( 1626, Christ and the Pilgrims of Emmaus ), both of which begin to express his more pointed and careful realism.

Incense was also used in the Bible to worship God and symbolize prayer, in both the Old Testament and New Testament ; one of the three Magi offered Christ frankincense, and in the Book of Revelation, angels and saints appear in Heaven offering incense to God, thus setting a precedent for Christian use of incense in worship.

The theologian is also too evident in his allusions to the Old Testament when dealing with New Testament incidents ; Mary at the birth of Jesus compares her destiny to that of Sarah, the Magi liken the star that went before the Israelites in the wilderness, and so on.

i. 24 ) refers to the ' potent names ' used by Egyptian sages, Persian Magi, and Indian Brahmins, signifying deities in the several languages.

In the Persian tradition of the history of Ardashir I ( 226 – 240 241 / 42 ), preserved in a Pahlavi text ( Nöldeke, Geschichte des Artachsir I. Papakan ), Hormizd I is made the son of a daughter of Mithrak, a Persian dynast, whose family Ardashir had extirpated because the Magi had predicted that the restorer of the empire of Persia would come from his blood.

In Delhi it was used by the Persian Magi descendants who migrate from Persia because of Safavid persecution in 16th century.

In the earliest depictions, the Magi are shown wearing Persian dress of trousers and Phrygian caps, usually in profile, advancing in step with their gifts held out before them.

In 1887 or 1888 he spent a period in Paris, where he met Sâr Joséphin Péladan, an eccentric mystic and occultist, who defined himself as a modern Rosicrucian, descended from the Persian Magi.

All three gifts are typical of Arabia and thus somewhat counter the traditional Persian origin of the Magi.

The most reliable and most widely accepted etymology for the name is that it is a Persian language compound made of two elements: Mugh / Muγ " Magi " + dād " given ", translating to " Magi-given " or " Magi's gift ".

The addition of spices such as cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg was, according to the English antiquary John Timbs, " in token of the offerings of the Eastern Magi.

Their religious practices and use of astrology caused derivatives of the term Magi to be applied to the occult in general and led to the English term magic.

The English ones include: Jacob's Rod or Staff ; Peter's Staff ; the Golden Yard-arm ; the L, or Ell ; the Ell and Yard ; the Yard-stick, and the Yard-wand ; the Ellwand ; Our Lady's Wand ; the Magi ; the Three Kings ; the Three Marys ; or simply the Three Stars.

This capacity, personified as a mysterious alter-ego called the Avatar, is dormant in most people, who are known as sleepers, whereas Magi ( and / or their Avatars ) are said to be Awakened.

In order to understand the metaphysics of the Mage setting, it is important to remember that many of the terms used to describe magic and Magi e. g., Avatar, Quintessence, the Umbra, and Paradox, Resonance, as well as the game mechanics a player uses to describe the areas of magic in which his character is proficient — the Spheres, look, mean, and are understood very differently depending on the paradigm of the Mage in question, even though they are often, in the texts of the game, described from particular paradigmatic points-of-view.

Another example is O. Henry ( author of " Gift of the Magi "), for whom the O. Henry Award is named.

It is a play about the Biblical Magi, three wise men from the East who followed a star and visited the baby Jesus in Bethlehem.

" The Gift of the Magi " is a short story written by O. Henry ( a pen name for William Sydney Porter ), about a young married couple and how they deal with the challenge of buying secret Christmas gifts for each other with very little money.

The Squirrel Nut Zippers song " Gift of the Magi " from their 1998 album Christmas Caravan is a duet sung from the point of view of both Jim and Della.

Magic is weak where the Infernal is strong, though infernally-tainted magics do exist, and are usually of great power, in order to tempt Magi.

Magic is treated in this game-system as a serious object of study: Magi are supposed to spend a long time in their laboratories: preparing new spells, studying their Arts, creating magic-items, etc.

To accommodate this, the system is geared for such a flow of time, allowing the Magi to prolong their lives with Longevity.

Some Christians believe that Isaiah's prophecy, " all they from Sheba shall come: they shall bring gold and incense " (: 6 ) is a prediction of the Biblical Magi bringing gifts of gold, myrrh and frankincense to the newborn Jesus.

Perhaps the most famous of his portraits is the one by Benozzo Gozzoli, on the southern wall of the Magi Chapel, at the Palazzo Medici-Riccardi, in Florence.

* The heraldic symbol of Three Crowns, referring to the three evangelical Magi ( wise men ), traditionally called kings, is believed thus to have become the symbol of the Swedish kingdom, but it also fits the historical ( personal, dynastic ) Kalmar Union ( 1397 – 1520 ) between the three kingdoms of Denmark, Sweden and Norway.

An altarpiece depicting the Adoration of the Magi ( 1748 – 50 ) is the work of Franz Anton Maulbertsch.

The Colon High School teams are known as the " Magi ", and the high school mascot is a white rabbit wearing a black top hat.

In mosaics in Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome, dating from 432-40, just after the council, she is not yet shown with a halo, and she is also not shown in Nativity scenes at this date, though she is included in the Adoration of the Magi.

The Shrine of the Three Kings ( German Dreikönigsschrein ) is a reliquary said to contain the bones of the Biblical Magi, also known as the Three Kings or the Three Wise Men.

() Matthew's account does not mention the angels and shepherds, while Luke's narrative is silent on the Magi and the star.
