Birds for which the lake has global importance include Magpie Geese, Wandering Whistling-ducks, Green Pygmy-geese, Pacific Black Ducks, Hardheads, Black-necked Storks, Australian Bustards, White-headed Stilts, Red-capped Plovers, Oriental Plovers, Black-fronted Dotterels, Long-toed Stints and Sharp-tailed Sandpipers.

It sometimes supports similarly important numbers of Magpie Geese, Pacific Black Ducks, Freckled Ducks and Oriental Plovers, as well as providing habitat for Australian Bustards.

The Alligator Rivers floodplains are of world importance for Magpie Geese

In particular, the Alligator Rivers area is known for its rich collection of waterfowl such as Magpie Geese, ducks, herons, ibises and spoonbills.

The Australian Magpie is found in the Trans-Fly region of southern New Guinea, between the Oriomo River and the Princess Mariane Strait, and across most of Australia, bar the tip of Cape York, the Gibson and Great Sandy Deserts, and southwest of Tasmania.

The Korean subspecies of the European Magpie ( P. p. sericea ) is more distantly related to all other ( including North American ) forms judging from the molecular evidence, and thus, either the North American forms are maintained as specifically distinct and the Korean ( and possibly related ) subspecies are also elevated to species status, or all magpies are considered to be subspecies of a single species, Pica pica.

If this view is correct, the Korean subspecies of the European Magpie, Pica pica sericea, should also be considered a separate species.
