Mahendra was born 11 June 1920 to King Tribhuvan Bir Bikram Shah of Nepal.

King Birendra was born at the Narayanhity Royal Palace in Kathmandu as the eldest son of the then Crown Prince Mahendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev and his wife Crown Princess Indra Rajya Laxmi.

The son of King Mahendra, whom he succeeded in 1972, he reigned until his death in the 2001 Nepalese royal massacre.

He is a keen conservationist and served as Chairman of the King Mahendra Trust for Nature Conservation ( later known as National Trust for Nature Conservation ) from 1982 until his ascension to the throne in 2001 .< ref >

Mahendra ( Devanagari: मह ें द ् र ) is a Sanskrit compound word deriving from Maha ( Highest Position ) and Indra Deva ( the King of Gods ) from Hindu mythology.

Later, in 1952 he became the President of the Morang District Nepali Congress and held that office until he was arrested and imprisoned by King Mahendra following the 1960 royal coup.

Ali has also sung some beautiful ghazals like Kina kina timro tasveer, Gajalu tee thula thula aankha, Lolaaeka tee thula and Ke chha ra diun in Nepali language with Narayan Gopal, a well known Nepali singer, and composer Deepak Jangam. Those songs were written by King Mahendra of Nepal These songs were compiled in an album entitled Narayan Gopal, Ghulam Ali Ra Ma, and are popular among Nepali music lovers to this day.

He held the office just 18 months before being deposed and imprisoned by order of King Mahendra.

King Mahendra responded with a new constitution enabling free parliamentary elections to take place in 1959.

King Mahendra, on 15 December 1960, suspended the constitution, dissolved parliament, dismissed the cabinet, imposed direct rule, and for good measure imprisoned Koirala and his closest government colleagues.

After the military quashed the coup that led to the removal of Mahendra Chaudhry, Qarase joined the Interim Military Government as a financial adviser on 9 June 2000, until his appointment as Prime Minister on 4 July.
