When Georg Brandes held a series of lectures in 1871 with the title " Main Currents in 19th-century Literature ", he defined the Modern Breakthrough and started the movement that would become Cultural Radicalism.

Vernon Louis Parrington is often cited as the founder of American studies for his three-volume Main Currents in American Thought, which combines the methodologies of literary criticism and historical research ; it won the 1928 Pulitzer Prize.

Parrington is best remembered as the author of Main Currents in American Thought, a politics-centered three-volume history of American letters from colonial times, postulating a sharp divide between the elitist Hamiltonian current and its populist Jeffersonian opponents, and making clear Parrington's own identification with the latter.
Main Currents won the Pulitzer Prize for History in 1928, and was for two decades one of the most influential books for American historians.
