Alexander was the fourth son of Malcolm III by his wife Margaret of Wessex, grandniece of Edward the Confessor.

He was succeeded by his predecessor's son Malcolm I ( Máel Coluim mac Domnaill ).

Constantine's surviving son Indulf, probably baptised in 927, would have been too young to be a serious candidate for the kingship in the early 940s, and the obvious heir was Constantine's nephew, Malcolm I.

Donald Campbell was born in Kingston-upon-Thames, Surrey, the son of Malcolm, later Sir Malcolm Campbell, holder of 13 world speed records in the 1920s and 30s in the famous Bluebird cars and boats, and his second wife, Dorothy Evelyn née Whittall.

King Duncan welcomes and praises Macbeth and Banquo, and declares that he will spend the night at Macbeth's castle at Inverness ; he also names his son Malcolm as his heir.

Prince Malcolm, Duncan ’ s son, has succeeded in raising an army in England, and Macduff joins him as he rides to Scotland to challenge Macbeth ’ s forces.

The result of the invasion was that one Máel Coluim, " son of the king of the Cumbrians " ( not to be confused with Máel Coluim mac Donnchada, the future Malcolm III of Scotland ) was restored to his throne, i. e., as ruler of the kingdom of Strathclyde.

Macbeth did not survive the English invasion, for he was defeated and mortally wounded or killed by the future Malcolm III (" King Malcolm Ceann-mor ", son of Duncan I ) on the north side of the Mounth in 1057, after retreating with his men over the Cairnamounth Pass to take his last stand at the battle at Lumphanan.

The Orkneyinga Saga records that Malcolm and Ingibiorg had a son, Duncan II ( Donnchad mac Maíl Coluim ), who was later king.

Malcolm met William at Abernethy and, in the words of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle " became his man " and handed over his eldest son Duncan as a hostage and arranged peace between William and Edgar.

Malcolm faced little recorded internal opposition, with the exception of Lulach's son Máel Snechtai.

Malcolm was accompanied by Edward, his eldest son by Margaret and probable heir-designate ( or tánaiste ), and by Edgar.

William and Malcolm agreed to peace by signing the Treaty of Abernethy, and Malcolm probably gave up his son Duncan as a hostage for the peace.

In Act 3, Scene VI of Shakespeare's Macbeth ( c. 1603 – 06 ) Lennox refers to Edward as " the most pious Edward ," and in Act 4, Scene III, Malcolm describes his powers of healing those afflicted with " the evil ", or scrofula.

A further provocation came in a case brought by Macduff, son of Malcolm, Earl of Fife, in which Edward demanded that Balliol appear in person before the English Parliament to answer the charges.

This dispute led to war and within the year Malcolm had invaded England and been killed along with his designated heir Edward, eldest of his sons by Margaret, in the Battle of Alnwick.

In 1054, the English king Edward the Confessor dispatched Earl Siward of Northumbria against the Scots, ruled by Mac Bethad mac Findláich ( Macbeth ), along with an otherwise unknown " Malcolm son of the king of the Cumbrians ", in Strathclyde.

It appears that he was not his brother's chosen heir, contrary to earlier custom, but that Malcolm had designated Edward, his eldest son by Margaret of Wessex, as the king to come.
