Elves are immortal, in the sense that they do not perceivably age, and even if their bodies are slain, their spirits remain bound to the world, going to the Halls of Mandos, where they are later re-embodied ; a cycle that will perpetuate for them until the world ends.

The most important of the Ainur who move into Earth are called the Valar (‘ Those with Power ’, singular ' Vala '), of which there are fourteen principal characters: Manwë, Ulmo, Aulë, Oromë, Mandos, Lórien, Tulkas, Varda, Yavanna, Nienna, Estë, Vairë, Vána, and Nessa.

They are more commonly called after their respective dwellings ‘ Mandos ’ ( possibly ‘ Death ’, ‘ Soul ’ or ‘ Doom ’) and ‘ Lórien ’ ( possibly ‘ Dreams, Sleep-Visions ’).

The manner with which the name appears in Unfinished Tales suggests that there are some kind of " foretelling " of The End but does not state that it comes from one of Mandos ' prophecies.

Christopher Tolkien included the name in The Shaping of Middle-earth because the first mention of the Second Prophecy of Mandos was placed there but Tolkien did not mention the existence of a Prophecy in the text published in Unfinished Tales.

The name was taken from the Doom of Mandos: " Tears unnumbered ye shall shed ...", which prophesied its disastrous outcome for the Elves and their allies.

Beren died in the quest for the Silmaril, and in despair, Lúthien's spirit departed her body and made its way to the halls of Mandos.
