For Cochise, the Americans held nothing sacred and had violated the rules of war by capturing and killing Mangas Coloradas during a parley session.

Geronimo's chief, Mangas Coloradas, sent him to Cochise's band for help in revenge against the Mexicans.

Two years later Mangas Coloradas became principal chief and war leader and began a series of retaliatory raids against the Mexicans.

Cochise joined with his father-in-law Mangas Coloradas ( Red Sleeves, Kan-da-zis Tlishishen ), the powerful Chihenne-Chiricahua chief, in a long series of retaliatory skirmishes and raids on the white settlements and ranches.

Mangas Coloradas, or Dasoda-hae (“ He Just Sits There ”) ( c. 1793 – January 18, 1863 ), was an Apache tribal chief and a member of the Eastern Chiricahua nation, whose homeland stretched west from the Rio Grande to include most of what is present-day southwestern New Mexico.

Mangas Coloradas ' daughter Dos-Teh-Seh married Cochise, principal chief of the Chokonen Apache.

Cochise ( or " Cheis ") was one of the most famous Apache leaders ( along with Geronimo and Mangas Coloradas ) to resist intrusions by Americans during the 19th century.

This group was once led by the chiefs Cochise ( whose name was derived from the Apache word Cheis, meaning " having the quality of oak "); Mangas Coloradas, Victorio, Nana, Juh.

At Apache Pass in 1862, Cochise and Mangas Coloradas, with around 500 fighters, held their ground against a New Mexico-bound force of California volunteers under General James Henry Carleton until caisson-mounted howitzer artillery fire was brought to bear on their positions in the rocks above.

Due to the Bascom Affair, Chief Cochise and Mangas Coloradas were attacking American settlements all across southern New Mexico Territory.

Apache leaders such as Mangas Coloradas of the Bedonkohe ; Cochise of the Chokonen ; Victorio of the Chihenne band ; Juh of the Nednhi band ; Delshay of the Tonto ; and Geronimo of the Bedonkohe led war or raiding parties against non-Apache.

After the American Civil War began in April 1861, Mangas Coloradas and Cochise, his son-in-law, struck an alliance, agreeing to drive all Americans and Mexicans out of Apache territory.

After traveling about two-thirds through, Roberts ' force was attacked by about 500 Apache warriors led by Mangas Coloradas and Cochise.

Later that year, Mangas and Cochise struck an alliance, agreeing to drive all Americans out of Apache territory.

He went to many wars together with the Chihenne leader Mangas Coloradas and Chokonen leader Cochise, and was particularly close to the Bedonkohe di-yin and leader Geronimo ; they grew up together even though they were from different bands.

In January 1863 Gen. Joseph Rodman West, under orders from Gen. Carleton, was able to capture Mangas Coloradas by duping him into a conference under a flag of truce.

During what was to be a peaceful parley session, the Americans took the unsuspecting Mangas Coloradas prisoner and later murdered him.

That night Mangas was tortured, shot and killed, as he was " trying to escape.

Mangas Coloradas himself was wounded in the action, receiving a bullet wound in the chest when attempting to kill one of Roberts ' cavalry scouts.

Mangas ' descendants and sources based on their testimony may have confused the Smithsonian with Fowler's Phrenological Cabinet in New York, where the skull was on display, leading to the misattribution.

Another possible fate of Mangas ' skull was that the skull was returned to the Apaches by the Smithsonian in a 1990 transfer but was not individually labeled.

Mangas Coloradas is said to have witnessed this attack, which inflamed his and other Apache warriors ' desires for vengeance for many years.

In 1851, miners tied Mangas Coloradas to a tree and whipped him after he tried to convince them to move away from the Pinos Altos, New Mexico area he loved.

He married Dos-teh-seh ( Dos-tes-ey, Doh-teh-seh – “ Something-at-the-campfire-already-cooked ”, b. 1838 ), the daughter of Mangas Coloradas, the leader of the Warm Springs and Mimbreño local groups of the Chihenne band, their children were Taza ( 1842 – 1876 ) and Naiche ( 1856 – 1919 ).

When the U. S. claimed former territories of Mexico in 1846, Mangas Coloradas signed a peace treaty with the nation, respecting them as conquerors of the Mexicans ' land.

In 2000 he formed The Pops season called " Conciertos en Mangas de Camisa ", that played popular music ( generally traditional pop ) and show tunes as well as well-known classical works.

Mangas Coloradas and his followers were especially menacing.
