Williams dominated F1 in 1992 and Patrese continued to deliver in his role of second driver to Nigel Mansell, moving out of the way for Mansell while leading comfortably at that year's French Grand Prix. Again Patrese handled the delicate situation about team orders diplomatically, repeatedly offering a " No comment " to questions about the team orders that had been imposed on him at the red flag period of the French race.

With Alain Prost, Ayrton Senna and Nigel Mansell all desperately trying to sign for Williams, Patrese's position looked to be under threat and he signed for Benetton before the end of the year.

Before the season began, Häkkinen and team-mate Nigel Mansell had complained the new car had been too small for them to fit in and they suffered from their hands and elbows bashing on the sides of the cockpit.

At the French Grand Prix, Frank Williams brought back Mansell, who shared the second car with Coulthard for the remainder of the season.

Senna took his fourth win in four ahead of Mansell, Alesi, Moreno, Prost and Emanuele Pirro.

Soon, Mansell passed Patrese and got Boutsen four laps later as Prost did the same to Patrese.

On Saturday, the track was considerably quicker as Mansell took nearly four seconds off his provisional best time from the previous day, turning a 1: 42. 172.

During Qualifying, she was unable to qualify after setting a time that was nine seconds slower than pole sitter Nigel Mansell and four seconds slower than team-mate van Poele.

The first five races of the championship had ended with Williams driver Nigel Mansell leading the Drivers Championship by 26 points having achieved five race wins in a row.

However, The Monaco Grand Prix had only been won in the last eight years by either Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost but Nigel Mansell was looking to achieve his first win at Monaco having won the previous five races.

He was initially announced as the partner of Mika Häkkinen ; however, a week before the first race, McLaren announced that Mansell would not compete in the first two races of the new season, as he could not fit into the MP4 / 10 car.

His place at McLaren for the first two races was taken by the team's test driver, Mark Blundell, as McLaren worked to build a wider monocoque to accommodate Mansell.

Between the Monaco GP and the Spanish GP, Williams announced they had brought David Coulthard in to replace Senna, with Nigel Mansell deputising at those races which did not overlap with his IndyCar commitments.

By Hungary, Mansell was 46 points ahead of Patrese and the Williams team were 77 points ahead of Benetton with 6 races to go.

With two more races to go, Mansell was already World Champion with 108 points but there was a big battle for second.

At the wet British Grand Prix at Silverstone, Nigel Mansell surprised all by scoring a second place for an atmos car for his first finish of the season after seven races of DNFs, a result which definitely pleased the hordes of British fans who were still gripped in Mansell-mania despite the driver's ( or rather, the car's ) lacklustre performance through the year.

The increasingly antagonistic duel came to a premature end at the Japanese Grand Prix when Mansell crashed heavily in practice incurring a back injury that put him out for the two races left in the season.

( The seat was then offered to Nigel Mansell who, accepting the position, went on to win two races at the end of the season.
