In 2004, a multidisciplinary team of academics from Complutense University, led by Francisco Parra Luna, Manuel Fernández Nieto and Santiago Petschen Verdaguer, deduced that the village was that of Villanueva de los Infantes.

European settlement of the area began when Manuel Nieto was granted the land for Rancho Los Nietos, which encompassed over, including present-day Fountain Valley.

Whittier's roots can be traced to Spanish soldier Manuel Nieto.

Manuel Nieto was one of the early Spanish dons or landowners in the area.

The serenade was led by prominent residents of Manila, including the Civil Governor of Manila José Cabezas de Herrera, José Burgos, Maximo Paterno, Manuel Genato, Joaquín Pardo de Tavera, Ángl Garchitorena, Andrés Nieto and Jacóbo Zóbel y Zangroniz.
