This leader must be a man who lives above illusions that heretofore have shaped the foreign policy of the United States, namely that Russia will agree to a reunited Germany, that the East German government does not exist, that events in Japan in June 1960 were Communist-inspired, that the true government of China is in Formosa, that Mao was the evil influence behind Khrushchev at the Summit Conference in Paris in May 1960, and that either China or Russia wants or expects war.

The Communists, tipped-off that a Nationalist offensive was imminent, retreated in the Long March, during which Mao Zedong rose from a mere military official to the most influential leader of the Communist Party of China.

In an arranged marriage, Chiang was married to a fellow villager named Mao Fumei.

While married to Mao, Chiang adopted two concubines ( concubinage was still a common practice for well-to-do, non-Christian males in China ): he married Yao Yecheng ( 姚冶誠, 1889 – 1972 ) in 1912 and Chen Jieru ( 陳潔如, 1906 – 1971 ) in December 1921.

Chen claiming that, by the time she married Chiang, he had already divorced Mao, and that Chen was therefore his wife.

Under Mao Zedong, the People's Republic of China held its first in 1952, but the second in 1963 was secret and unacknowledged until the early 1980s.

" In Shanghai, Mao also met with one of his old teachers, Yi Peiji, a revolutionary and member of the Kuomintang, or Chinese Nationalist Party, which at the time was gaining increasing support and influence across China.

Mao soon set up his own branch in Changsha, also establishing a branch of the Socialist Youth Corps.

Mao also ordered that each company must have a party branch office with a commissar as its leader who would give political instructions based upon superior mandates.

Although Mao himself officially declared the Cultural Revolution to have ended in 1969, the power struggles and political instability between 1969 and the arrest of the Gang of Four in 1976 are now also widely regarded as part of the Revolution.

In 1963, the Chinese Communist Party began to openly denounce the Soviet Union, publishing a series of nine polemics against its Marxist revisionism, with one of them being titled On Khrushchev's Phoney Communism and Historical Lessons for the World, in which Mao charged that Khrushchev was not only a revisionist but also increased the danger of capitalist restoration.

Meanwhile, Mao also sacked Propaganda Department director Lu Dingyi, a Peng Zhen ally.

Mao also restored the function of some formal party institutions, such as the operations of the party's Politburo, which ceased functioning between 1966-8 because the Central Cultural Revolution Group held de facto control of the country.

Mao also inducted several of his supporters to the Central Military Commission, and placed his loyalists in leadership roles of the Beijing Military Region.

Wang Dongxing, a trusted ally of Mao, was also criticized.

Yet another international event would have a large impact on not only Mao but also the Chinese intelligensia was the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917.

Mao also believed strongly in the concept of a unified " people ".

Kang was deeply involved with the Yan ' an Rectification Movement launched by Mao in February 1942.

In his final years, Kang became involved in the Criticize Lin, Criticize Confucius campaign that was created by the beneficiaries of the Cultural Revolution to oppose Zhou Enlai and other veteran officials in the struggle over who would succeed Mao Zedong.
