This challenge has caused the industry and the town of Marble to undergo many boom and bust periods since quarrying started in the mid 1880s, making the town emblematic of the economic fluctuations that beset a single-industry economy.

A study of granite countertops was done ( initiated and paid for by the Marble Institute of America ) in November 2008 by National Health and Engineering Inc of USA, and found that all of the 39 full size granite slabs that were measured for the study showed radiation levels well below the European Union safety standards ( section 4. 1. 1. 1 of the National Health and Engineering study ) and radon emission levels well below the average outdoor radon concentrations in the US.

At the junction between the Frome Clay and the overlying Forest Marble is the Boueti Bed, so called because of the large numbers of the brachiopod, Goniorhynchia boueti found there.

The formation of the Forest Marble suggests a shallowing of the sea and the remains of pieces of tree, and bits of land-dwelling animals, are found among the turtles, frogs and salamanders within.

Some other minerals found in the district are Antimony, Arsenic, Lignite or Brown Marble, Mica and silver.

On returning without permission to his Marble Palace at St Petersburg, he found himself superseded in the empress's favor by the younger Potemkin.

Frosterley Marble has been taken from the Rogerley Quarry for more than 700 years ; the decorative columns found in Durham Cathedral date from about 1350.

The principal room is the large Marble Hall ( 1 ) at the centre of the south front ; this hall is the beginning of a grand procession of rooms, and corresponds to the former Great Parlour or Saloon ( 9 ) on the north front.
