The generation of Italian engravers who trained in the shadow of Dürer all either directly copied parts of his landscape backgrounds ( Giulio Campagnola and Christofano Robetta ), or whole prints ( Marcantonio Raimondi and Agostino Veneziano ).

Raphael made no prints himself, but entered into a collaboration with Marcantonio Raimondi to produce engravings to Raphael's designs, which created many of the most famous Italian prints of the century, and was important in the rise of the reproductive print.

In the early 16th century, the text I Modi was an woodcut album created by the designer Giulio Romano, the engraver Marcantonio Raimondi and the poet Pietro Aretino.

Raphael had no knowledge of printmaking himself, and was probably too busy to want to learn the techniques, but he was the most successful of the Italians in spreading his fame through prints, through his much debated relationship with the engraver Marcantonio Raimondi and his workshop.

Where he learnt engraving is unknown, but he took advantage of the works of Marcantonio Raimondi, whose motifs are reworked in Lucas ' engravings and paintings, and became highly skilled in that art at a very early age: the earliest known print by him ( Mohammed and the Murdered Monk ) dates from 1508, when he was perhaps only 14, yet reveals no trace of immaturity in inspiration or technique.

Giulio's drawings have long been treasured by collectors ; contemporary prints of them engraved by Marcantonio Raimondi were a significant contribution to the spread of 16th-century Italian style throughout Europe.

It is rumored that he contributed to the drawings upon which the album I Modi was engraved by Marcantonio Raimondi.

Aretino prospered, living from hand to mouth as a hanger-on in the literate circle of his patron, sharpening his satirical talents on the gossip of politics and the Papal Curia, and turning the coarse Roman pasquinade into a rapier weapon of satire, until his sixteen ribald Sonetti Lussuriosi ( Lust Sonnets ) written to accompany Giulio Romano's exquisitely beautiful but utterly pornographic series of drawings engraved by Marcantonio Raimondi under the title I Modi finally caused such outrage that he had to temporarily flee Rome.

Marcantonio Raimondi, also simply Marcantonio, ( c. 1480 – c. 1534 ) was an Italian engraver, known for being the first important printmaker whose body of work consists mainly of prints copying paintings.

Marcantonio Raimondi was born around 1480-2, probably in Argine, near Bologna, Italy.
