Marcus Vitruvius Pollio ( born c. 80 – 70 BC, died after c. 15 BC ) was a Roman writer, architect and engineer, active in the 1st century BC.

Cetius Faventinus speaks of " Vitruvius Polio aliique auctores " in his epitome ; it is possible that the cognomen derives from this mention by Cetius, meaning Vitruvius, Polio, and others – further confusing the cognomen, an inscription in Verona names Lucius Vitruvius Cordo and an inscription from Thilbilis North Africa ( near Guelma ) names Marcus Vitruvius Mamurra.

Likely born a free Roman citizen, by his own account Vitruvius served the Roman army under Julius Caesar with the otherwise poorly identified Marcus Aurelius, Publius Minidius, and Gnaeus Cornelius.

In about 14 B. C., Roman engineer Marcus Vitruvius Pollio used the projection to construct sundials and to compute sun positions.

Marcus Vitruvius Pollio, a 1st-century BCE Roman architect ’ s treatise “ De architectura ,” with various sections, dealing with urban planning, building materials, temple construction, public and private buildings, and hydraulics, remained a classic text until the Renaissance.

During his lifetime he published two works: The Elements of Architecture ( 1624 ), which is a free translation of de Architectura by Marcus Vitruvius Pollio, executed during his time in Venice ; and a Latin prose address to the king on his return from Scotland ( 1633 ).

In Roman architectural practice, capitals are briefly treated in their proper context among the detailing proper to each of the " Orders ", in the only complete architectural textbook to have survived from classical times, the Ten Books on Architecture, by Marcus Vitruvius Pollio, better known just as Vitruvius, dedicated to the emperor Augustus.

Certain astrological fragments recorded in Pliny the Elder, Censorinus, Flavius Josephus, and Marcus Vitruvius Pollio are also attributed to Berossus, but are of unknown provenance, or indeed are uncertain as to where they might fit into his History.

He acquired much favor with the Emperor Hadrian, who adopted him as his son and successor on 25 February 138, after the death of his first adopted son Lucius Aelius, on the condition that Antoninus would in turn adopt Marcus Annius Verus, the son of his wife's brother, and Lucius, son of Aelius Verus, who afterwards became the emperors Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus.

Her mother ’ s marriage to Agrippa was her second marriage, as Julia the Elder was widowed from her first marriage, to her paternal cousin Marcus Claudius Marcellus and they had no children.

From his first appearance in the Senate, Brutus aligned with the Optimates ( the conservative faction ) against the First Triumvirate of Marcus Licinius Crassus, Gnaeus Pompeius Magnus and Gaius Julius Caesar.
