While a member of the Institute of Social Research, Marcuse developed a model for critical social theory, created a theory of the new stage of state and monopoly capitalism, described the relationships between philosophy, social theory, and cultural criticism, and provided an analysis and critique of German fascism.

The essay had a major influence on the Frankfurt School and their aesthetic and political analysis, particularly Theodor W Adorno, Max Horkheimer and Herbert Marcuse.

At the beginning of One-Dimensional Man Marcuse writes, “ The people recognize themselves in their commodities ; they find their soul in their automobile, hi-fi set, split-level home, kitchen equipment ,”< ref > Harold Marcuse < http :// www. marcuse. org / herbert / quotes / QuotRedThread. html # Capitalism ></ ref > meaning that under capitalism ( in consumer society ) humans become extensions of the commodities that they buy, thus making commodities extensions of people's minds and bodies.

Adorno, along with the other major Frankfurt School theorists Max Horkheimer and Herbert Marcuse, argued that advanced capitalism had managed to contain or liquidate the forces that would bring about its collapse and that the revolutionary moment, when it would have been possible to transform it into socialism, had passed.

In this review, Marcuse revised the interpretation of Marxism, from the standpoint of the works of the early Marx.

After emigrating from Germany in 1933, in 1934, Marcuse immigrated to the United States, where he became a citizen in 1940.

In German, Symphonie was a generic term for spinets and virginals from the late 16th century to the 18th century ( Marcuse 1975, 501 ).

However, Fromm distinguished his concept of love from unreflective popular notions as well as Freudian paradoxical love ( see criticism by Marcuse below ).

He was a leading member of the Frankfurt School of critical theory, whose work has come to be associated with thinkers such as Ernst Bloch, Walter Benjamin, Max Horkheimer and Herbert Marcuse, for whom the work of Freud, Marx and Hegel were essential to a critique of modern society.

Another important work was Critique of Herbert Marcuse: The one-dimensional man in class society, in which Mattick forcefully rejected Marcuse's thesis that the proletariat, as Marx understood it, had become a mythological concept in advanced capitalist society.

Marcuse also argued that Fromm, as well as his close colleagues Sullivan and Karen Horney, removed Freud's libido theory and other radical concepts, which thus reduced psychoanalysis to a set of idealist ethics, which only embrace the status quo.

Fromm argues that later scholars such as Marcuse accepted these concepts as dogma, whereas social-psychology requires a more dynamic theoretical and empirical approach.

Several months after qualifying as a lecturer in philosophy, Adorno delivered an inaugural lecture at the Institute for Social Research, an independent organization which had recently appointed Horkheimer as its director and, with the arrival of the literary scholar Leo Lowenthal, social psychologist Erich Fromm and philosopher Herbert Marcuse, sought to exploit recent theoretical and methodological advances in the social sciences.

Nevertheless, in September 1951 Adorno returned to the United States for a six-week visit, during which he attended the opening of the Hacker Psychiatry Foundation in Beverly Hills, met Leo Lowenthal and Herbert Marcuse in New York and saw his mother for the last time.

Marcuse argues that " advanced industrial society " created false needs, which integrated individuals into the existing system of production and consumption via mass media, advertising, industrial management, and contemporary modes of thought.

Marcuse was instrumental in connecting a student, Collette Waddell, with a Polish Holocaust survivor, Nina Morecki, which led to a book about the Holocaust that discussed not just the era, but how survivors pursued their lives afterward.
