The early 1720s were very important for Marivaux ; he wrote a comedy ( now mostly lost ) called L ' Amour et la vérité, another comedy, Arlequin poli par l ' amour, and an unsuccessful tragedy, Annibal ( printed 1737 ).

Achard's greatest successes and popularity were in the period between the two World Wars when contemporary critics favorably compared him to some of his renowned French predecessors such as Pierre de Marivaux and Alfred de Musset.

However, the young Marivaux concentrated more on writing novels than plays.

Pierre Carlet de Chamblain de Marivaux ( February 4, 1688 – February 12, 1763 ), commonly referred to as Marivaux, was a French novelist and dramatist.

He parodied Homer to serve the cause of Antoine Houdar de La Motte, ( 1672 – 1731 ) an ingenious paradoxer ; Marivaux had already done something similar for François Fénelon, whose Telemachus he parodied and updated as Le Telemaque travesti ( written in 1714 but not published until 1736 ).

Marivaux ' friends included Helvétius, Claudine Guérin de Tencin, Bernard le Bovier de Fontenelle and even Madame de Pompadour ( who allegedly provided him with a pension ).

He was also inspired by Jeu de l ' amour et du hasard of Marivaux, by Molière, and took some details from Beaumarchais: the quotation at the beginning of the film comes from Le Mariage de Figaro

Fontenelle and Houdar de la Motte were the great men of her celebrated salon, where one could also encounter Marie-Catherine d ’ Aulnoy, the poet Catherine Bernard, the Abbé de Bragelonne, Father Buffier, the Abbé de Choisy, Madame Dacier, the mathematician Dortous de Mairan, Fénelon, Hénault, Marivaux, the Abbé Mongault, Montesquieu, the lawyer Louis de Sacy ( one of the Marquise ’ s favorites ), the Marquis de Sainte-Aulaire, Baronne Staal, Madame de Tencin who received the Marquise ’ s guests at her death in 1733, or the Abbé Terrasson.

Marivaux is said to have written his first play, the Père prudent et équitable, when he was only eighteen, but it was not published till 1712, when he was twenty-four.

In the opening years of the next century Marivaux was to show himself a Modern in establishing a new genre of theatre, unknown to the Ancients, the sentimental comedy ( comédie larmoyante ).

His father was a Norman financier whose real name was Carlet, but who assumed the surname of Chamblain, and then that of Marivaux.

Marivaux is reputed to have been a witty conversationalist, with a somewhat contradictory personality.
