Maruti 800: Most popular of earlier hatchbacks in India

The Maruti 800 has been the most successful of hatchbacks in India with over 2. 5 million sales since its launch in 1983.

Since 2004, Maruti 800 has been overtaken by Maruti Alto as the car with highest annual sales.

When Suzuki came to know that the Government of India had contacted Volkswagen as well, it did everything to pip the German company in the race to produce India's first People's Car ( Maruti 800 ).
