This version of " critical " theory derives from Kant's ( 18th-century ) and Marx's ( 19th Century ) use of the term " critique ", as in Kant's Critique of Pure Reason and Marx's concept that his work Das Kapital ( Capital ) forms a " critique of political economy.

Significantly, Karl Marx's theory of alienation argues among other things that capitalism disrupts the rooted nature of traditional relationships between workers and their work.

In 1844 Marx wrote The Economic and Philosophical Manuscripts, a work which covered numerous topics, and went into detail to explain Marx's concept of alienated labour.

This work contains Marx's criticism of materialism ( for being contemplative ), idealism ( for reducing practice to theory ) and overall, criticising philosophy for putting abstract reality above the physical world.

In collaboration with Engels he also set about writing a book which is often seen as his best treatment of the concept of historical materialism, The German Ideology ; the work, like many others, would not see publication in Marx's lifetime, being published only in 1932.

During the last decade of his life Marx's health declined and he became incapable of the sustained effort that had characterised his previous work.

This work is also notable for another famous Marx's quote: " From each according to his ability, to each according to his need.

The reasons for Marx's widespread influence revolve around his ethical message: with its " morally empowering language of critique " against the dominant capitalist society, no other body of work was so relevant to modern times and simultaneously so outspoken about the need for change.

Outside and against this process of turning of Marxism into an ideology of domination, however, were various revolutionary tendencies which still drew on Marx's work to inform their struggles and which rejected both social-democratic and Marxist-Leninist versions of his theory.

This could perhaps be seen as an extension of Marx's work as he did not cover this area in detail.

Engels ' earliest contribution to Marx's work was writing to the Deutsch-französische Jahrbücher journal, which was edited by both Marx and Arnold Ruge in Paris in 1844.

He has been described as an intelligent man, understanding English, having learned German on his own by translating the German version of Karl Marx's Das Kapital to Russian.

However, in Marx's theory, the value-creating function of labour power is not its only function ; it also importantly conserves and transfers capital value.
