It is revealed by Moiraine that Rand ( like his friends Mat Cauthon and Perrin Aybara ) is Ta ' veren-a person around whom the Pattern is woven.

Influenced by such Western swing-music artists as Jimmie Rodgers and Moon Mullican, as well as popular singers Bing Crosby, Eddy Arnold and Frank Sinatra, it was not long before he was a member of Moon Mullican's band, and made some early Mullican-style recordings like " Each Beat of my Heart " and " My Heart's Like a Welcome Mat " from the late 1940s to the early 1950s.

Loial warns Moiraine of a threat to the Eye of the World, which is confirmed by vivid and disturbing dreams Mat, Rand and Perrin have had.

The story features young heroes Rand al ' Thor, Mat Cauthon, and Perrin Aybara, who join Shienaren soldiers in a quest to retrieve the Horn of Valere.

Rand, Perrin Aybara, and Mat accompany a Shienaran party southbound in pursuit of the horn and dagger.

At Falme, Rand, Ingtar and the others form a small party to reclaim the dagger and Horn of Valere, consisting of Ingtar, Hurin, Rand, Perrin, and an increasingly sickly Mat.

Book 3, The Dragon Reborn, was in fact told almost exclusively from the points-of-view of Mat Cauthon, Perrin Aybara, and Egwene al ' Vere, despite the fact that it is undoubtedly about Rand ( all three parties eventually follow him to Tear and are present when he pulls the sword Callandor from the Stone and proclaims himself the Dragon Reborn ), and the following books have continued in following the adventures of other characters besides Rand, to such a degree at times that in the tenth book, Crossroads of Twilight, Rand only appears in two chapters and the epilogue.

When Rand and his party arrive in the Waste she is amongst those that give permission for Rand, Mat and Moiraine to enter Rhuidean.

When both Rand and Mat Cauthon return from Rhuidean without Muradin, Couladin attacks them, accusing them of murdering his brother.

The Sniffer Hurin, in the employment of Lord Agelmar, accompanies Rand, Mat, and Perrin from their departure from Fal Dara until the conclusion of events in Falme.

The youngest of five daughters, Egwene grew up in Emond's Field alongside Rand al ' Thor, Mat Cauthon, Perrin Aybara and Nynaeve al ' Meara.

When Trollocs invaded the Two Rivers region, Rand, Mat and Perrin were spirited away by Moiraine Damodred, Aes Sedai of the Blue Ajah, apparently for their own protection.

Whenever he and childhood friends Rand al ' Thor and Perrin Aybara were caught out of line, Mat was frequently the impetus behind it ( and his sisters Bodewhin and Eldrin frequently the ones snitching on him ).

Against Moiraine's advice, Mat took Perrin and Rand to explore the city.

Heedless of the danger, Mat followed Mordeth immediately, and Perrin and Rand, unwilling to leave him behind, were forced to follow after.

Unnoticed by Perrin or Rand, Mat had picked up a dagger that he carried with him on the flight from Shadar Logoth.

While Rand and Perrin also display the ta ' veren < nowiki >' s </ nowiki > ability to bend chance, they usually create as many unlikely misfortunes as they do miracles ; Mat spreads and experiences nothing but good luck.

Rand may be the central character of the story, but Mat and Perrin are only slightly less important ; they are critical parts of Rand's battle against the Shadow, integral to his success at Tarmon Gai ' don, and each in his own way is just as dangerous as the Dragon Reborn despite being unable to channel.

When Moiraine absconded with several Two Rivers youths — specifically Rand al ' Thor, his friends Mat Cauthon and Perrin Aybara, and Rand's childhood sweetheart ( and Nynaeve's apprentice ) Egwene al ' Vere, Nynaeve volunteered to track them down and bring them back.

After this merger, his compulsion to hunt Rand, Mat and Perrin grew even stronger, aided by the fact that he could already sense where they were.

He enticed Rand, Mat, Perrin, Verin Sedai and Ingtar Shinowa to Seanchan-occupied Falme, where he lost the dagger and the Horn.
