He co-manages an imprint of Gotee, Mono Vs Stereo, along with Matt Hoopes.

Thiessen founded Relient K in 1998, with guitarist Matt Hoopes, and bassist Brian Pittman, and recorded the demo All Work & No Play the same year.

Later, his mother remarried and the family moved to Bolivar, Ohio, where he met and befriended future bandmates Matt Hoopes and Brian Pittman.

Matthew (" Matt ") Ryan Hoopes is the lead guitarist of Relient K, a Christian rock band that was formed in 1998.

Hoopes has slowly developed into the band's lead guitarist over the years, despite Matt Thiessen playing lead a lot in the band's early days.
