Pontian and other church leaders ( among them Hippolytus ) were exiled by the emperor Maximinus Thrax to Sardinia, and in consequence of this sentence he resigned on 25 or 28 September 235.
Maximinus then marched on Rome to fight for his rights, taking the II Parthica, among other legions, with him.

When the time of her death arrived she was carried by angels to Aix and into the oratory of Saint Maximinus, where she received the viaticum ; her body was then laid in an oratory constructed by St. Maximinus at Villa Lata, afterwards called St. Maximin.

When Licinius and Constantine began to make common cause with one another, Maximinus entered into a secret alliance with the usurper Caesar Maxentius, who controlled Italy.

The French tradition of Saint Lazare of Bethany is that Mary, her brother Lazarus, and Maximinus, one of the Seventy Disciples and some companions, expelled by persecutions from the Holy Land, traversed the Mediterranean in a frail boat with neither rudder nor mast and landed at the place called Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer near Arles.
By 308 there were therefore no fewer than four claimants to the rank of Augustus ( Galerius, Constantine, Maximian and Maxentius ), and only one to that of Caesar ( Maximinus ).
In one rescript replying to a petition made by the inhabitants of Tyre, transcrbed by Eusebius of Caesarea, Maximinus expounds an unusual pagan orthodoxy, explaining that it is through " the kindly care of the gods " that one could hope for good crops, health and the peaceful sea, and, that not being the case, one should blame " the destructive error of the empty vanity of those impious men weighed down the whole world with shame ".
Following Galerius ' death, Maximinus was no longer constrained ; he enthusiastically took up renewed persecutions in the eastern territories under his control, encouraging petitions against Christians, one of which, addressed to him and to Constantine and Licinius, is preserved in a stone inscription at Arycanda in Lycia, " to request that the Christians, who have long been disloyal and still persist in the same mischievous intent, should at last be put down and not be suffered by any absurd novelty to offend against the honour due to the gods.
They include two women, six youths, and seven men who never claimed the imperial power ; one usurper of the reign of Maximinus Thrax, one of the time of Decius, and two of the time of Aurelian ; and four who are entirely fictitious.
The seventh book recounts the reign of Maximinus Thrax from 235 to 238, and the final one describes the Year of the Six Emperors in 238.
The source actually gives 32 names but as the author, writing under the name of one Trebellius Pollio, places the last two under the reign of Maximinus Thrax and Claudius II respectively, this leaves thirty pretenders supposedly under the reign of Gallienus.
Licinius defeated Maximinus Daia in April 313 at Tarsus, and the latter committed suicide shortly thereafter, leaving Licinius and Constantine the only Emperors ; they governed the Empire along the usual lines of East and West, respectively, discarded the defunct Tetrarchical system, warred against one another in 316 – 317, and again in 324 – 325.

There is no reason to believe that his studies were interrupted by the persecutions of Maximinus of Thrace ; his alleged journey to Alexandria, at this time, may therefore be considered at least doubtful, and probably never occurred.
