Also in 2009, the team honored former Quarterback Steve McNair, by placing a small navy blue disc on the back of their helmets, inside of the navy blue disk, a white number 9 ( 9 was the number McNair wore during his time with the Oilers / Titans ).

After the 2005 season, McNair was traded to the Baltimore Ravens, with whom he played for two seasons before retiring after thirteen NFL seasons.

With McNair as the starting quarterback the Ravens improved to a franchise best mark of 13 – 3 on the season, despite only going 6 – 10 the previous year with Boller at the helm.

Following the Week 8 Bye, the Ravens once again decided to go with McNair as their starter.

Following the retirement of Steve McNair, Boller faced a three way battle for the starting job between himself, former Heisman Trophy winner Troy Smith, and rookie Flacco, who was drafted with the Ravens ' first round draft choice.
