When Theseus returned victorious to Athens, where he sacrificed the Bull, Medea tried to poison him.

In Greek and Roman mythology, Medea tried to kill Theseus by poisoning him by putting aconite in his wine, in that culture thought to be the saliva of Cerberus, the three-headed dog who guarded the Underworld.

One of his earliest extant plays, Medea, includes a speech that he seems to have written in defence of himself as an intellectual ahead of his time, though he has put it in the mouth of the play's heroine:

In 425 BC, which is about the time that Herodotus is thought by many scholars to have died, the Athenian comic dramatist, Aristophanes, created The Acharnians, in which he blames The Peloponnesian War on the abduction of some prostitutes-a mocking reference to Herodotus, who reported the Persians ' account of their wars with Greece, beginning with the rapes of the mythical heroines Io, Europa, Medea and Helen.

Apollonius of Rhodes, in the Argonautica mentions that Medea was taught by Hecate, " I have mentioned to you before a certain young girl whom Hecate, daughter of Perses, has taught to work in drugs.

In some versions, Medea is said to have dismembered his body and scattered his parts on an island, knowing her father would stop to retrieve them for proper burial ; in other versions, it is Absyrtus himself who pursued them, and was killed by Jason.

So Medea conspired to have Pelias ' own daughters kill him.

The dramatic episodes in which Medea plays a role have ensured that she remains vividly represented in popular culture.

:' But Jason called to mind the counsels of Medea full of craft, and seized from the plain a huge round boulder, a terrible quoit of Ares Enyalius ; four stalwart youths could not have raised it from the ground even a little.

He was reputed to have conquered the whole of western Asia in 17 years with the help of Ariaeus, king of Arabia, and to have founded the first empire, defeating the legendary kings Barzanes of Armenia ( whom he spared ) and Pharnus of Medea ( whom he had crucified ).

480 – 406 BCE ) whose play Medea seems to have offended Athenian audiences when he fictionally speculated that shamaness Medea killed her own children instead of their being killed by other Corinthians after her departure, and whose Hippolytus, narratively introduced by Aphrodite, Goddess of Love in person, is suspected to have displeased his contemporary audiences because he portrayed Phaedra as too lusty.

A hero may have made it knowingly ( in Medea ) or unknowingly ( Oedipus ).

Within a period of four years, the snails have expanded from their first known population in Medea Creek in Agoura Hills to nearly 30 other stream sites.

Medea resolves to kill her own children as well, not because the children have done anything wrong, but because she feels it is the best way to hurt Jason.

However, the violent and powerful character of princess Medea, and her double nature — both loving and destructive — became a standard for the later periods of antiquity and seems to have inspired numerous adaptations thus became standard for the literal classes.

With the rediscovery of the text in first-century Rome ( the play was adapted by the tragedians Ennius, Lucius Accius, Ovid, Seneca the Younger and Hosidius Geta, among others ), again in 16th-century Europe, and in the light of 20th century modern literary criticism, Medea has provoked differing reactions from differing critics and writers who have sought to interpret the reactions of their societies in the light of past generic assumptions ; bringing a fresh interpretation to its universal themes of revenge and justice in an unjust society.

Seven ships of the Royal Navy have borne the name HMS Medea, or HMS Medee, after the Medea of Greek mythology, whilst another was planned:

* HMS Medea was to have been a 32-gun fifth-rate of 658 tons.

The two women have collaborated on plays including Electra ( RSC ); The Good Person of Sezuan ( 1989, National Theatre ); Hedda Gabler ( 1991, The Abbey Theatre and BBC2 ); the controversial Richard II, with Shaw in the title role, also at the National Theatre ( 1995 ) and televised by BBC2 ; Footfalls, whose radical staging so enraged the Beckett estate that the production was pulled during its run ; The PowerBook, at the National Theatre, a dramatisation of Jeanette Winterson's novel ; Medea ( 2000 – 2001, Queen's Theatre and Broadway ); and Shakespeare's Julius Caesar, in which Shaw played the small part of Portia.

From Euripides, seventeen tragedies have survived, among them Medea and The Bacchae.

Aegeus's wife Medea recognized Theseus immediately as Aegeus ' son and worried that Theseus would be chosen as heir to Aegeus ' kingdom instead of her son Medus.

Both statements are inconsistent with Medea being Aegeus ' wife by the time Theseus first came to Athens.

Determined to preserve her own son's inheritance, Medea convinced her husband that Theseus was a threat and that he should be disposed of.

As Medea handed Theseus a cup of poison, Aegeus recognized the young man's sword as his own, which he had left behind many years previous for his newborn son, to be given to him when he came of age.

* In Greek mythology, Medea attempted to poison Theseus with a cup of wine poisoned with wolfsbane.

* Theseus being on the list is inconsistent with accounts of his life usually including him encountering Medea at an early stage of his adventures, yet many years after the Argonauts completed their adventure ( Medea, by that time, was not only abandoned by Jason, but also bore a child from Aegeus ).

Jason's helper in the Athenian vase-paintings is not Medea — who had an untoward history in Athens as the opponent of Theseus — but Athena.

But his aged father Aigeus, who fears the powerful young king ( whom he quite fails to recognise as his son ), would have poisoned Theseus on the urging of his lover Medea, who wants the Athenian throne for her sons.

Some characters such as Medea and Theseus are able to occasionally make accurate prophecies due to the unseen work of some god, or the use of magic.

Then Medea killed the two boys that she bore to Jason, fearing that they would be murdered or enslaved as a result of their mother's actions.

According to Apollodorus, Talos was slain either when Medea drove him mad with drugs, deceived him that she would make him immortal by removing the nail, or was killed by Poeas's arrow ( Apollodorus 1. 140 ).

Having killed Pelias, Jason and Medea fled to Corinth.

According to the poet Eumelus to whom the fragmentary epic Korinthiaka is usually attributed, Medea killed her children by accident.

Medea then returned to Colchis and, finding that Aeëtes had been deposed by his brother Perses, promptly killed her uncle, and restored the kingdom to her father.

She and her sisters killed their father, having been tricked by Medea into believing this was needed to rejuvenate him.

She was killed, along with her father, by Medea, who either sent her a peplos steeped in inflammable poison or set fire to the royal palace.

* A daughter of Pelias, who, together with her sisters, killed their father, as Medea tricked them into believing this was needed to rejuvenate him.

Amuro's Gundam eventually destroyed the Black Tri-Stars, but Matilda Ajan ( who was the target of Amuro's secret admiration and affection ) was killed when one of the Doms smashed her Medea transport aircraft.

In Greek mythology, Medea killed the two children fathered by Jason ( one of the Argonauts ) after he left her for another woman.

Offstage, while Medea ponders her actions, Glauce is killed by the poisoned dress, and Creon is also killed by the poison while attempting to save her.

* Pelias was killed by his daughters, who were deceived by Medea into thinking he could be resurrected.

She also inspired Kentucky painter Thomas Satterwhite Noble's 1867 painting, The Modern Medea ; Medea was a woman in Greek mythology who killed her own children.
