The politics of North Korea take place within a nominally democratic multi-party system within the framework of the official state philosophy, Juche, a concept created by Hwang Chang-yŏp for and later attributed to Kim Il-sung.

According to Hwang, Kim Jong-il personally directed even minor details of state affairs, such as the size of houses for party secretaries and the delivery of gifts to his subordinates.

Wong and directed by Howard Silver ) as well as Maureen Fleming's After Eros ( with music by Philip Glass ).

In 2011, Hwang received the PEN / Laura Pels International Foundation for Theater Award as a Grand Master of American Theater.
