There were previously four railway lines coming into the town ; from the north the line came down the coast from Melton Constable into the terminus at Beach station.

The Bure rises near Melton Constable, upstream of Aylsham, which was the original head of navigation.

Further competition arrived in 1883, when the Eastern and Midlands Railway opened a station near the terminal basin on its line from Melton Constable to North Walsham.

The pineapple-topped obelisk at Holt is one of a pair gateposts from Melton Constable park, the other having been given to the town of Dereham in 1757.

Most of this network was closed by British Railways in 1959 but the short section from Melton Constable railway station via Holt to Sheringham ( services continuing on to Cromer and Norwich ) escaped closure for a few more years-finally succumbing in 1964 when the branch was cut back to Sheringham ( now the nearest national rail-head, served by frequent services to Norwich along the ' Bittern Line ').

The Themelthorpe to Norwich line was built in 1882 by the Lynn and Fakenham Railway Company which was taken over by the M & GN in 1893, as part of a line that ran to Melton Constable.

The river rises near Melton Constable, upstream from Aylsham and continues to Great Yarmouth and the North Sea, although it was only made navigable after 1779, allowing grain, coal and timber to be brought up river.

Aylsham once had two railway stations, both now closed, Aylsham South railway station on the Great Eastern line between County School railway station ( near North Elmham ) and Wroxham and the other Aylsham ( North ) railway station on the M & GNJR line from Melton Constable to Yarmouth.

* Melton Constable, Norfolk

Melton Constable is a village and civil parish in the English county of Norfolk.

The place-name ' Melton Constable ' is first attested in the Domesday Book of 1086, where it appears as ' Maeltuna '.

Melton Constable reached its heyday about 1911 ; in the census of that year it had a population of 1, 157.

The main line ran from Peterborough to Great Yarmouth via South Lynn and Melton Constable.

Branches ran from Sutton Bridge to an end on junction with the Midland Railway branch from Saxby, at Little Bytham near Bourne, Lincolnshire ; from Melton Constable to Cromer ; and from Melton Constable to Norwich.

The M & GN's administrative headquarters was at Austin Street, King's Lynn, but its engineering centre and the heart of the system was at Melton Constable: before the railway arrived this village had a population of just over 100 people.

Most of Melton Constable Railway Works was closed at this time, as was the Austin Street ( King's Lynn ) administrative headquarters.

His grandfather William built wagons in the Midland and Great Northern Railway workshops at Melton Constable.

The two routes crossed at Melton Constable, the joint railway's main engineering centre.

Norwich Thorpe which is the current station now simply named Norwich, which was once the terminus for certain passenger services from the London direction until 1916 as well as a goods station until demolition in the 1970s, and which was the terminus for the Midland and Great Northern Joint Railway line from Melton Constable which closed in 1959.

Melton was originally settled around the old church in the north east of Melton, later moving to Yarmouth Road, which is the old road between Great Yarmouth and London.

In 1837 he exhibited ' The Meeting of His Majesty's Staghounds on Ascot Heath ,' painted for the Earl of Chesterfield, and in 1839 ' The Melton Hunt ,' purchased by the Duke of Wellington ( both of these have been engraved, the former by F. Bromley, the latter by W. Humphreys ). In 1841, he painted ' A Shooting Party at Rawton Abbey ' for the Earl of Lichfield, and in 1848 ' The Cottesmore Hunt ' for Sir Richard Sutton.

He started playing in bands at school, the first being a covers band called ' Visions of ' 85 ', consisting of Andy on Drums, Steven " Barney " Barningham on vocals, Danny Selway on Bass, Richard " Boff " Smith ( later Loveridge ) on Keyboards and Andy Melton on Rhythm Guitar.

The main routes through the district are Crescent Road, Cravenwood Road, Delaunay's Road, Cleveland Road, Crumpsall Lane, Middleton Road, Lansdowne Road ( the main shopping area with the post office ), one half of Bury Old Road between Melton Road and Crescent Road ( the other side of the road being in the Higher Broughton area of Salford ) and Ash Tree Road ( bounded on the east side by Crumpsall Park ).

The name Melton comes from the early English word Medeltone – meaning ' Middletown surrounded by small hamlets ' ( and therefore has the same origin as places called Milton and Middleton ).
