Nathan Roberts replaced English and Jonathan Donahue ( also a member of the alternative rock band Mercury Rev ) joined in 1989.

In 1992, the band released their major label debut Hit to Death in the Future Head after the recording of which Donahue left the band to concentrate on Mercury Rev.

Mercury Rev is an American alternative rock group, that formed in the late 1980s in Buffalo, New York.

With their early records, Mercury Rev offered experimental, psychedelic rock, which gradually shifted to a melodic, ornate sound.

Despite considerable critical acclaim, their early releases never gave Mercury Rev more than cult popularity, though they appeared on the smaller second stage at some 1993 Lollapalooza stops.

The 1998 release of the acclaimed Deserter's Songs ( which featured appearances by Garth Hudson and Levon Helm of The Band ) made Mercury Rev unexpected pop stars.

This was followed up in 2006, by a compilation album, The Essential Mercury Rev: Stillness Breathes 1991-2006 and the film soundtrack album Hello Blackbird.

The event was reprised at the Teatro Communale in Ferrara, Italy on 10 May 2009, with Mercury Rev, Mark Lanegan, Lisa Gerrard, Peter Murphy, Soap & Skin and Mark Linkous.

In the 1990s and early 2000s, bands like Sigur Rós, M83, Mercury Rev, ... Shoegazing, stoner rock / metal and noise pop genres emerged into the mainstream with the explosion of bands such as Kyuss, Slowdive, The Verve, My Bloody Valentine, Flying Saucer Attack, Loop, Ride, The Flaming Lips, Failure, Monster Magnet, Cave In, Sun Dial, Hum, Orange Goblin, Spacemen 3, Spiritualized, Mercury Rev and Muse.
