In 1872, Col. Meriwether Lewis Clark, Jr., grandson of William Clark of the Lewis and Clark expedition, traveled to England, visiting the Epsom Derby, a famous race that had been running annually since 1780.

Commissioned by President Thomas Jefferson, it was led by two Virginia-born veterans of Indian wars in the Ohio Valley, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark.

In 1803, President Thomas Jefferson commissioned the Corps of Discovery, and named U. S. Army Captain Meriwether Lewis its leader, who selected William Clark as his partner.

In his writings, Meriwether Lewis presented a somewhat negative view of her, though Clark had a higher regard for her, and later on provided some support for her children in subsequent years.

While he, Meriwether Lewis and their men were crossing the Bitterroot Mountains they ran low of food, and Clark took six hunters and hurried ahead to hunt.

Named after Meriwether Lewis and after Victor Trevitt's hometown of Lewiston, Maine ; but people don't know that was the reason Vic Trevitt shouted the idea out.

In 1803, President Thomas Jefferson issued the following instructions to Meriwether Lewis: " The object of your mission is to explore the Missouri river, & such principal stream of it, as, by its course & communication with the waters of the Pacific Ocean, whether the Columbia, Oregon, Colorado and / or other river may offer the most direct & practicable water communication across this continent, for the purposes of commerce.

In a famous letter to Meriwether Lewis in 1803, Thomas Jefferson instructed the Lewis and Clark expedition to " carry with you some matter of the kine-pox ; inform those of them with whom you may be, of its efficacy as a preservative from the smallpox ; & encourage them in the use of it ..." Jefferson had developed an interest in protecting Native Americans from smallpox having been aware of epidemics along the Missouri River during the previous century.

It was a curiosity when Meriwether Lewis sent some slips and cuttings to President Jefferson in March 1804.

Meriwether Lewis was told that the people of the Osage Nation " esteem the wood of this tree for the making of their bows, that they travel many hundred miles in quest of it.

The race was founded by Meriwether Lewis Clark, Jr. along with the Kentucky Derby, the Clark Handicap, and the Falls City Handicap.

Meriwether Lewis passed through on his way to meet what became known as the Lewis and Clark Expedition.

Meriwether Lewis and William Clark passed through the South Sioux City area in 1804.

In 1805, Captain Meriwether Lewis traveled up the Jefferson and Beaverhead first, but when the rest of the expedition came, a sign Lewis had left at the confluence of the Beaverhead and Big Hole telling them to follow the Beaverhead had been cut down by a beaver, and the expedition traveled up the Big Hole instead.

The Milk River was given its name by Captain Meriwether Lewis, of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, who described the river in his journal:

The prominent physical feature of the county is the Gallatin River, named by Meriwether Lewis in 1805 for Albert Gallatin, U. S. Treasury Secretary from 1801-14.

Presidential candidate William Harris Crawford, as well as famed American explorer Meriwether Lewis during his youth ; his family owned lands along the Broad River in The Broad River Valley located in Wilkes ( now Oglethorpe ) County which borders Elbert County.

Meriwether County was formed on December 14, 1827 as the 73rd county in Georgia.

Lewiston, across the Idaho state line from Clarkston, is named for Meriwether Lewis, and is the larger and older of the two cities ( ironically Lewis and Clark never even set foot on the Clarkston side of the river ).

* Sacagawea ( c. 1788 – December 20, 1812 ) – accompanied and assisted Meriwether Lewis and William Clark on the Lewis and Clark Expedition ( 1804 – 1806 ), the first American overland expedition to the Pacific coast and back.

Meriwether Lewis, of the Lewis and Clark Expedition fame, met his death while traveling on the Trace.

George was slain on the night of December 15 – 16, 1811 by two nephews of Thomas Jefferson, Lilburn Lewis and Isham Lewis, who were also relatives of Meriwether Lewis.
