Jeanne Moreau plays Juliette de Merteuil, a conniving socialite who manipulates the Vicomte de Valmont ( played by Gérard Philipe ) into meeting and seducing Marianne ( Annette Vadim ).

Merteuil calls on her sometime-partner, the rakish and similarly amoral Vicomte de Valmont ( John Malkovich ), to do the deed.

Jo-won ( Vicomte Sébastien de Valmont ) and Madam Jo ( Marquise Isabelle de Merteuil ) were in the film cousins ( Jo-won the younger cousin ), and it is revealed that Jo-won's first love was Madam Jo, whereas in the novel, they were rivals, yet using the same tools for their revenge: sex.

Although Merteuil does not have the charming libertine Valmont for assistance, she learns Cecile's music teacher, Danceny ( Henry Thomas ), has been writing love letters to Cecile.

The wealthy and popular Kathryn Merteuil ( Gellar ) takes the sheltered and naïve Cecile Caldwell ( Blair ) under her wing, promising to turn Cecile into a model student.

The Marquise de Merteuil ( Glenn Close ) appears to be virtuous and upstanding, but in fact is a sexually ravenous, amoral schemer who plays games with men out of bitterness at the constricted station of women in her society.

Shot in black and white in the style of the French New Wave ( Nouvelle Vague ) Vadim's whirlwind portrayal of Merteuil and Valmont's deceitful dealings brings together a clash of late 1950s society and 18th-century morality.

Following his arrival in New York, Sebastian discovers the wealth of his new family ; meeting Kathryn Merteuil ( Amy Adams ) for the first time and bettering her with piano and vocabulary.

Madame de Volanges, distraught by her daughter's sudden state of illness, calls upon Merteuil to speak to Cécile.

Merteuil advises Cécile to consensually continue an affair with Valmont, telling her she should take advantage of all the lovers she can acquire in a life so constricted by her gender.

Merteuil had promised Valmont a night in her company should he be successful in his scheme to seduce Madame de Tourvel and provide written proof of his conquest.

Valmont, his ego damaged, heeds her request and coldly leaves Tourvel, who falls desperately ill. Valmont goes back to Merteuil, who in the meantime has taken Chevalier Danceny as her lover.

Valmont arranges for Danceny to leave Merteuil for Cecile, which leads to him once again demanding the immediate fulfillment of her promise.

Before he dies, he asks Danceny to visit Tourvel and assure her of his true love ; Valmont also hands him a collection of letters from Merteuil that detail her scheming.

Susa wrote for her the role of the " Marquise de Merteuil " in his opera Dangerous Liaisons, which premiered at the San Francisco Opera on September 10th, 1994.

Volanges confides in Merteuil that Gercourt chose Cecile as she was raised in a convent to keep her chaste before marriage.

Angered over the loss of her lover and his slight of her character, Merteuil plots to deface Cecile's virtue by having her friend Valmont ( Colin Firth ) seduce Cecile.

Merteuil convinces her cousin to allow Cecile to join her in the country while helping Cecile write secret love letters to Danceny.

When Cecile confides in Merteuil, Merteuil encourages her young cousin to marry Gercourt and keep Danceny as her lover.

Marquise Isabelle de Merteuil ( Madam Jo )' s former lover is arranged to be Cécile's future husband in the novel, but in the film, his character is Madam Jo's husband.

Valmont convinces Cecile to write Danceny explaining that Merteuil encourages Cecile to marry Gercourt and keep Danceny as her lover.

The film ends with Cecile's wedding to Gercourt with Merteuil watching on alone.

The character is primarily a spoof of Kathryn Merteuil ( played by Sarah Michelle Gellar ) in Cruel Intentions, and was partially based on Mackenzie Siler ( played by Anna Paquin ) from She's All That.

Les Liaisons dangereuses ( Dangerous Liaisons ) by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos is again made up of the correspondence between the main characters, most notably the Marquise de Merteuil and the Vicomte de Valmont.

In 1987 she played the disturbed book editor Alex in Fatal Attraction, and in 1988 she played the scheming aristocrat The Marquise de Merteuil in Dangerous Liaisons.

Nevertheless, secretly jealous of Tourvel, she refuses to grant Valmont his prize unless he breaks off with Tourvel completely ; Merteuil threatens to ruin his proud reputation as a debaucher.

She returned to the West End from 13 March – 23 May 2009, playing Madame de Merteuil in Yukio Mishima's Madame De Sade, directed by Michael Grandage as part of the Donmar season at Wyndham's Theatre.

Valmont and Marianne fall in love much to his dismay and to the delight of Merteuil.

The world-premiere cast included Thomas Hampson as Valmont, Frederica von Stade as Merteuil, David Hobson as Chevalier de Danceny, Renée Fleming as Tourvel and Mary Mills as Cécile de Volanges.
