* 2005 – Prime Minister Paul Martin announces that Michaëlle Jean will be Canada's 27th Governor General.

The current, and 22nd, Prime Minister of Canada is the Conservative Party's Stephen Harper, who was appointed on February 6, 2006, by Governor General Michaëlle Jean, following the general election that took place that year.

The current governor general is David Lloyd Johnston, who has served since 1 October 2010 ; Conservative prime minister Stephen Harper recommended him to succeed Michaëlle Jean.

The third woman to hold this position was also the first Caribbean-Canadian governor general, Michaëlle Jean.

She was in 1999 appointed as governor general by Elizabeth II, Queen of Canada, on the recommendation of Prime Minister of Canada Jean Chrétien, to replace Roméo LeBlanc as viceroy, and she occupied the post until succeeded by Michaëlle Jean in 2005.

The three opposition parties planned to table a motion of non-confidence in the House of Commons, and counted on the likelihood that the Governor General, Michaëlle Jean, would invite the coalition to govern instead of dissolving parliament and calling an election so soon after the last election.

The event was officially opened by Governor General Michaëlle Jean, who was accompanied by Prime Minister Stephen Harper and International Olympic Committee president Jacques Rogge.

In 2008, Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, of the re-elected minority government of Canada, requested that Governor General Michaëlle Jean prorogue Parliament.

The casket's path through the community was lined with officers from the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, paying homage to LeBlanc's time as minister of the Crown with that portfolio, and the sitting governor general, Michaëlle Jean, her prime minister, Stephen Harper, and LeBlanc's former prime minister, Jean Chrétien, all attended.

Stephen Harper did in fact declare Parliament " dysfunctional " in August 2008 and called on Governor General of Canada Michaëlle Jean to dissolve parliament for the 2008 federal election.

However, Rae was passed over again, this time in favour of Michaëlle Jean.

On July 1, 2008, he was appointed by Michaëlle Jean, Governor General of Canada as Officer of the Order of Canada, the second grade of the highest civilian honour in Canada.

Under an order-in-council issued by Governor General Michaëlle Jean on February 6, 2006 — the day Harper was appointed prime minister — when " the prime minister is unable to perform the functions of his office " Lawrence Cannon, then Jim Prentice, then the balance of the cabinet by order of precedence, " is authorized to act for the prime minister.

During the swearing-in ceremony of Governor General of Canada | Governor General Michaëlle Jean on Parliament Hill, the Ottawa chapter of Citizens for a Canadian Republic demonstrated for the office to be elected and severed from the monarchy.

Additionally, since the time of Clarkson's appointment, themed artistic exhibitions have been mounted at Rideau Hall, such as that during the tenure of Michaëlle Jean wherein the show " Body and Land " featured select silkscreen prints from the artist's book The Journals of Susanna Moodie by author Margaret Atwood and artist Charles Pachter.

In recent years, the network has moved from that style of programming to focusing solely on live news programs and documentary programs, including The Passionate Eye and Rough Cuts, both formerly hosted by Michaëlle Jean, and Politics, a political affairs program which was hosted by Don Newman and aired twice daily.

On December 30, 2009, Cummings was named an officer of the Order of Canada by Governor General Michaëlle Jean.

In June 2010, the Canadian Navy celebrated its 100th anniversary with a Fleet Review in the waters off of Greater Victoria, by Canada's former Governor General Michaëlle Jean.

The ceremony was also attended by the Governor General Michaëlle Jean and Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

The meeting was followed by the government's acknowledgement, in the Speech from the Throne delivered by Governor General Michaëlle Jean on April 4, 2006, that an apology would be given along with proper redress.

The inaugural production in the new opera house was Richard Wagner ’ s epic tetralogy Der Ring des Nibelungen ( The Ring of the Nibelung ), attended by Governor General Michaëlle Jean, as well as numerous other Canadian luminaries.

In 2010, Knopff was appointed by the Prime Minister to the Governor General Consultation Committee, a special committee to recommend a successor to Governor General of Canada Michaëlle Jean.

Following their research and deliberations, the first Victoria Cross decoration was struck in 2007, as confirmed by Deputy Herald Chancellor Emmanuelle Sajous, and the medal was officially released to the public on 16 May 2008 by Governor General Michaëlle Jean at Rideau Hall.

On February 4, 2008, Governor General Michaëlle Jean, on the advice of Prime Minister Stephen Harper, appointed John Crosbie as Lieutenant Governor of Newfoundland and Labrador, succeeding Edward Roberts.

She presented Grands Reportages on RDI and The Passionate Eye on CBC Newsworld as well as having her own talk show, called Michaëlle.

However, Conservative Prime Minister Stephen Harper, on 10 September 2007, requested Governor General Michaëlle Jean to appoint the aforementioned Bert Brownby then winner of two Alberta senatorial electionsto the Senate.
