Centurion ( previously known as Verwoerdburg, after Hendrik Frensch Verwoerd ) is an area with 279, 430 inhabitants in Gauteng Province of South Africa, located between Pretoria and Midrand ( Johannesburg ).

From here, the N3 passes Edenvale and Alexandra before terminating at the Buccleuch Interchange just south of Midrand and north of Sandton, which is the point at which the N3, N1 and M1 converge.

In keeping with the definition of a metropolitan area, Johannesburg is multi-nodal, with several centres which are important within their own right: these include Sandton, Randburg, Midrand, Germiston, Roodepoort, Kempton Park, Boksburg, Benoni and Springs.

Midrand was established as a municipality in 1981, but ceased to be an independent town in the restructuring of local government that followed the end of apartheid in 1994.

) Suburbs that are generally regarded as being in Midrand include among others: Country View, Carlswald, Crowthorne, Glen Austin, Halfway House, Halfway Gardens, Kyalami, Vorna Valley and Randjesfontein.

In 2010, it was reported that the City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality wished to annex Midrand from the City of Johannesburg, reportedly to boost the City of Tshwane's income, which was severely strained.

This greater area stretches almost east-west from Randfontein to Nigel, and some north-south from Midrand to Orange Farm and Vosloorus, a total area almost four times that officially stated for the metropolis, and over four times that for Greater London.

Midrand has not had much significant development, so a lot of open space remains.
