On 24 April 1826 over 1, 000 men and women, many armed, gathered at Whinney Hill in Clayton-le-Moors to listen to a speaker from where they marched on Sykes ’ s Mill at Higher Grange Lane, near the site of the modern police station and Magistrate ’ s Courts, and smashed over 60 looms.

He was educated at Northampton Grammar School and, after the age of 14, Mill Hill School in London ( on scholarship ), where he studied mathematics, physics, and chemistry with his best friend John Shilston.

The Shuck building, which is now Henning's Restaurant, was the office of General George H. Thomas, when he gathered an army of several thousand to go to Mill Springs to defend the Cumberland Valley.

Following a difficult economic period in the 1980s that saw high unemployment and downtown stagnation, several key events have led to a period of economic and cultural renaissance, including the transformation of the historic Bates Mill Complex.

There are also several brooks through town, with Mill Brook lying near the town center ( the site of a covered bridge ).

Other ponds include Snipatuit Pond, Long Pond, Snow's Pond, Hartley's Mill Pond, Mary's Pond, Leonards Pond, Mill Pond and Hathaway Pond, as well as several smaller bodies of water.

Originally a lumbering town, little remains other than a cluster of several houses at Mill and Fourth and Fifth Streets.

The William Huston store, opened in 1830, was the forerunner of a business center that later included the famous Broughton Wagon Shop, the Van Every Mills, now " Ye Olde Cider Mill ," several taverns, two distilleries, and two churches.

The city retains several historic sites in addition to the Marine Mill, such as the General Store, built in 1870 ; the Stone House Museum, built in 1872 ; the Village Hall, built in 1888 ; the Lutheran Church ; and the Fire Hall.

The Cedar Cliff Land Company ran newspaper advertisements targeted at upwardly mobile immigrants who worked in Paterson's silk industry, offering the city-sized lots for sale at auctions ( with free lunches and brass bands ) held at St. Mary's Parish Hall, and also opened the Cedar Cliff Silk Mill, which became one of several silk mills in the community.

In 1866, during excavation work for construction of Mill # 3 of the Harmony Mills, the bones of a mastodon were unearthed over a period of several weeks.

That same year, several other salt producers were operating within the city limits including ; G. A. Porter & Company, Haskin's Salt Mill and J. W. Barker & Company.
