George S. Nixon and Wingfield made huge fortunes in Goldfield by forming the Goldfield Consolidated Mining Company.

The Mining Gazette was founded in Ontonagon, Michigan in July 1858 by George Emerson.

The Hearst Memorial Mining Building at the University of California, Berkeley is currently home to the university's Materials Science and Engineering Department, with research and teaching spaces for the subdisciplines of Biomaterials ; Chemical and Electrochemical Materials ; Computational Materials ; Electronic, Magnetic and Optical Materials ; and Structural Materials.

Construction of the Hearst Memorial Mining Building began in 1902, and the building was completed in 1907, with a dedication ceremony held on August 23rd of that year.

The college did not have a dedicated building, and due to the size of the college, the Hearst Memorial Mining Building was chosen as the first building under the Hearst Plan to be constructed.

The New Amphidrome was renamed the James R. " Dee " Ice Stadium in 1943 when the Michigan College of Mining and Technology ( now Michigan Technological University ) purchased it for their hockey team.

After an interruption of operations at the mine, a group of investors purchased about 7, 000 acres ( 28 km² ) of land around the discovery sight and formed the Dahlonega Consolidated Gold Mining Co. in 1895.

The Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company occupied the building from 1936 until 1968, when the Cadillac Overall Company purchased it.

In 1860, the paper was purchased by James R. Devereau and moved to Houghton, where it was published weekly as The Portage Lake Mining Gazette.

Bradley Mining Company first optioned Sulphur Bank mercury mine from Ruddock in 1927 and then purchased the mine and surrounding.

The mine's serious development began in 1893 when it was purchased by the Argonaut Mining Company.

In 1929, at the recommendation of Fred Searls of Nevada City, Newmont Mining Corp. purchased the Empire Mine from Bourn.

Turquoise dated at 700 A. D. was mined in pre-Columbian America ; in the Cerillos Mining District in New Mexico, estimates are that " about 15, 000 tons of rock had been removed from Mt Chalchihuitl using stone tools before 1700.

In order to feed the giant sawmill it had established in Carter County, which required logs from 70 acres of land each day to keep it running, the Missouri Lumber and Mining Company laid down miles of narrow gage railroads that radiated outward beyond Carter County and into neighboring Reynolds, Wayne, Butler, Ripley and Shannon counties.
