A suburban area, Mitcham is located on the border of Inner London and Outer London.

It is both residentially and financially developed, well served by Transport for London, and home to Mitcham Town Centre, Mitcham Common, Mitcham Library, and Mitcham Cricket Green.

Mitcham is on the east side of the London Borough of Merton and is bounded by the London Borough of Wandsworth, the London Borough of Croydon, the London Borough of Lambeth and the London Borough of Sutton.

The nearest mainline railway station to the commercial centre of Mitcham is Mitcham Eastfields located between Mitcham Junction and Streatham which opened on 2 June 2008.

Mitcham tram stop replaced the station, and is located on the same site.

The suburb is in the City of Mitcham local government area, the South Australian House of Assembly electoral district of Waite and the Australian House of Representatives Division of Boothby.

Millhouse, as the New LM's only parliamentary representative ( in the South Australian House of Assembly, representing the electoral district of Mitcham ), kept a high profile for the New LM until the emergence of the Australian Democrats led many New LM members, including Millhouse and his assistant Janine Haines, to join the fledgling party, after which the New LM ceased to exist.

Mitcham was a local government district in north east Surrey from 1915 to 1965 around the town of Mitcham.

Around 1995 the route was changed completely, with a new route to Sutton via Mitcham Junction continuing on a loop to Wimbledon rejoining itself south of Streatham replacing the West Croydon service.

Mitcham Common takes up the greater part of the boundary and area to the south.

The Surrey Iron Railway ( SIR ) was a horse-drawn plateway of approximately standard gauge that linked the former Surrey towns of Wandsworth and Croydon via Mitcham ( all now suburbs of south London ).

The constituency covered a much larger area than it does today and was reduced in 1918 to create the Mitcham constituency and in 1950 to create the Merton and Morden constituency ( both subsequently merged to create the Mitcham and Morden constituency ).

The City of Mitcham was founded in 1853 and was the first local government area formally founded in South Australia after the City of Adelaide.

The area had previously consisted largely of lavender fields, the last remnants of the famous Mitcham lavender industry.

Near Schwerkolt Cottage, the rocky cascades are bordered by drier open grassy woodlands, rare Valley Heathy Forest rich with native orchids, particularly near Antonio Park, Yarran Dheran, the Hillcrest area at Mitcham, and the Chaim Court bushland and pipe-track at Donvale.

The borough was abolished in 1965 by the London Government Act 1963 and the area was transferred to Greater London to be combined with that the Municipal Borough of Mitcham and the Merton and Morden Urban District to form the present-day London Borough of Merton.
