In 1856, Thomas Montgomerie, a British Royal Engineers lieutenant, noticed a tall mountain in the Karakorams and called it K1 ( denoting peak 1 of the Karakorams ).

Montgomerie ( 1797 – 1856 ), who was an Assistant Surgeon in the service of the Government.

Montgomerie died in 1856 and his land on Duxton was auctioned off.

The town itself was not created until 1101, when Robert de Belesme, the son of Roger de Montgomerie, moved from Quatford, constructing a castle and church on the site of the modern-day town.

The canal was first proposed by Hugh Montgomerie, 12th Earl of Eglinton in 1791.

The first creation occurred in 1074 for Roger de Montgomerie, one of William the Conqueror's principal counselors.

Robert Boyd is first mentioned in connection with a feud with the Montgomeries, in which Patrick Montgomerie of Irvine was slain in December 1523.

Archibald William Montgomerie, 13th Earl of Eglinton KT, PC ( 29 September 1812 – 4 October 1861 ), styled Lord Montgomerie from 1814 to 1819, was a British Conservative politician.
