The east-west grid of downtown Yangon was laid out by British military engineers Fraser and Montgomerie after the Second Anglo-Burmese War.

The canal was first proposed by Hugh Montgomerie, 12th Earl of Eglinton in 1791.

In March 2009, Montgomerie played in his milestone 500th European Tour event at the Open de Andalucia where he played well and made the cut, but was not a factor on the weekend.

Tom Kite, who was still on the golf course when Montgomerie finished, wound up winning the championship.

Famously, Montgomerie was left with only one shirt to play in during the Monday playoff, a dark tartan design, which did not help his cause in the very hot playing conditions.

At the 1995 PGA Championship, Montgomerie birdied the final three holes of the Riviera Country Club course in the final round, to tie Steve Elkington at 17 under par, which was a record low score in a major championship.

Montgomerie was not part of Nick Faldo's 2008 Ryder Cup team, with the wildcards going to Paul Casey and Ian Poulter.

On 28 January 2009, it was announced that Montgomerie would be the captain the European team at the 2010 Ryder Cup at Celtic Manor.

In 2011, Montgomerie was named president of the English junior golf charity, the Golf Foundation, and in 2012 the Scottish first minister, Alex Salmond, named him as an ambassador for the Scottish junior golf programme, clubgolf.

Ellesmere Castle was probably an 11th century motte-and-bailey castle most likely built by either Roger de Montgomerie, 1st Earl of Shrewsbury or his son Roger the Poitevin at Castlefields overlooking the Mere.

Eglinton was born in Palermo, Sicily, the son of Major-General Archibald Montgomerie, Lord Montgomerie ( 30 July 1773 – 4 January 1814 ), the eldest son of Hugh Montgomerie, 12th Earl of Eglinton.

The heir apparent is the present holder's son Hugh Archibald William Montgomerie, Lord Montgomerie ( b. 1966 )

He was the youngest son of Roger de Montgomerie, 1st Earl of Shrewsbury and Mabel de Bellême.

After the Norman Conquest of 1066 the principal estates in Shropshire were all bestowed on Norman proprietors, pre-eminent among whom is Roger de Montgomerie, 1st Earl of Shrewsbury, whose son Robert de Bellesme forfeited his possessions for rebelling against Henry I, when the latter bestowed the Earldom on his Queen for life.

During the 1160s Fitz-Alan distributed his lands amongst his Anglo-Saxon supporters and the lands of Egglisham were granted to Robert de Montgomerie, fifth son of Roger de Montgomerie.

Findlater was the son of James Ogilvy, 3rd Earl of Findlater, and Lady Anne Montgomerie.

Robert, Lord Boyd of Kilmarnock and Robert, Master of Boyd, his son, witnessed a contract between the Countess of Eglinton and Montgomerie of Langschaw on 17 November 1546 ( see also The Lands of Lainshaw ).

When John Gordon died, she remarried, on 21 September 1640, the Sir Harry Montgomerie of Giffen, second son of Alexander Montgomerie, 6th Earl of Eglinton, and they had no children.

His son, Walter Montgomerie Neilson, erected a monument to his memory there in 1883.

Boyle was the son of Patrick Boyle, eldest son of David Boyle, Lord Boyle, by his first wife Elizabeth Montgomerie.

Led by Montgomerie ’ s friend and fellow-poet Hugh Barclay of Ladyland, this enterprise soon collapsed, Barclay being killed in the process, and on 14 July 1597 Montgomerie was declared an outlaw.
