Montgomery has been the home of Alabama State University, a historically black university, since the Lincoln Normal University for Teachers relocated from Marion in 1887.

Montgomery County lies in a region of well-developed karst topography and has a cave system named Dunbar Cave.

Today, many of the same qualities that Montgomery and others found in the island are enjoyed by tourists who visit year-round.

It is named after Robert R. Livingston, delegate to the 1775 Continental Congress, member of the committee that drafted the Declaration of Independence, and father-in-law of Richard Montgomery, after whom Montgomery County ( and similarly named counties in many other states ) were named.

Jazz singer and pianist Nat King Cole, country singer Hank Williams, blues singer Big Mama Thornton, Melvin Franklin of The Temptations, and guitarist Tommy Shaw of Styx are among the many musicians to get their start in Montgomery.

In the beginning of the twenty-first century, Montgomery experienced rapid growth, along with many other communities in Kendall County.

The border of Oswego and Montgomery has been disputed through the community for many years, as both communities are not quite sure as to where the borders may lie within the community itself.

The borough has many square blocks of fine old Victorian homes and apartment buildings, and most its families live north and west of downtown areas, extending north along Montgomery Avenue to North Wynnewood Avenue.

Summarily, many businesses and residences with North Wales addresses are located in outlying townships that were never annexed by the borough, such as the Montgomery Mall in Montgomery Township.

The original general store is still standing but today functions as one of the many " antique " dealers in Montgomery County.

However, many residents of the eastern section of Montgomery County more often travel to Roanoke or Salem for work, shopping, and services since these cities are generally closer and do not require driving up Christiansburg Mountain on U. S. Route 460 ( which is a concurrency with U. S. Route 11 here ) or Interstate 81.

Maud Montgomery took little active interest in the education of her young children other than to have them taught by tutors brought from England.
