Monuments and museums such as the Vatican Museums and the Colosseum are amongst the world's 50 most visited tourist destinations ( the Vatican Museums receiving 4. 2 million tourists and the Colosseum receiving 4 million tourists every year ).

Monuments and tombs from the Greek War of Independence are on the island of Sphacteria, the most important being the monument to the Italian philhellene Santorre di Santa Rosa.

In 1966 Gray secured the support of philanthropist Lila Acheson Wallace ( 1889-1984 ), who offered $ 150, 000 to the International Fund for Monuments and UNESCO for this project.

After being nominated for inclusion on 28 October 1995, an evaluation of the site by the International Council on Monuments and Sites ( an advisory body of the World Heritage Committee ), recommended that the island be inscribed on the basis of criteria ( iii ) and ( iv ) of the World Heritage List's selection criteria, which relate the cultural significance of a site.
