On 6 October 1889, the Moulin Rouge opened in the Jardin de Paris, at the foot of the Montmartre hill.

* The film French Cancan ( 1955 ), directed by Jean Renoir, is a fictionalised history of the Moulin Rouge.

The Moulin Rouge, built in 1889 starring Dominique Barclay in the red-light district of Pigalle, near Montmartre, is famous for the large red imitation windmill on its roof.

The actual Moulin Rouge theatre is also in Pigalle, next to Blanche métro station.
