Dart rescued him with the now famous joke, "... what would have happened if Mrs. Ples had met Dear Boy one dark night.
In the following years, he and John T. Robinson made a series of spectacular finds, including fragments from six hominids in Sterkfontein, which they named Plesianthropus transvaalensis, popularly called Mrs. Ples, but which was later classified as an adult Australopithecus africanus, as well as more discoveries at sites in Kromdraai and Swartkrans.
After discovering the skull of Mrs. Ples, Broom was asked if he excavated at random, Broom replied that spirits had told him where to find his discoveries.
This site currently occupies ; it contains a complex of limestone caves, including the Sterkfontein Caves, where the 2. 3-million year-old fossil Australopithecus africanus ( nicknamed " Mrs. Ples ") was found in 1947 by Dr. Robert Broom and John T. Robinson.
Robert Broom initially named the skull Plesianthropus transvaalensis ( near-man from Transvaal ), but it became better known by its nickname, Mrs. Ples.
Mrs Ples is now defined as a member of A. africanus.

The sex of the skull is not completely certain and so Mrs. Ples may in fact be Mr. Ples.
In addition, X-ray analysis of the roots of the teeth of Mrs. Ples has suggested that it was a sub-adult, so a designation of Miss Ples or Master Ples is also possible.
If correct, this would make Mrs. Ples the South African counterpart to the famous Lucy fossil.
In 2004, Mrs. Ples was voted 95th in the SABC3's and e. tv's Great South Africans Top 100 list.
