Two towns in the county have town councils: Carlow and Muine Bheag.

There are 21 councillors in the county council who are returned from five local electoral areas: Borris ( 3 ), Carlow East ( 4 ), Carlow West ( 5 ), Muine Bheag ( 4 ) and Tullow ( 4 ).

Muine Bheag is the official name of the town.

St. Brigid ’ s National School founded in 1865, is a primary school in Muine Bheag catering for boys only from classes 2nd to 6th.

St Mary's National School is a co-educational school under Church of Ireland patronage, based in Bagenalstown ( Muine Bheag ) County Carlow.

Presentation De La Salle College is a secondary school in Muine Bheag established in 1983, this Catholic College is under the trusteeship of the De La Salle Brothers, the Presentation Sisters and Bagenalstown Parish.

Muine Bheag Vocational School is a secondary school in Muine Bheag.

It was permanently closed for goods traffic on 6 September 1976 and renamed " Muine Bheag " in 1988.

Muine Bheag hosts a floral festival every August.

This then joins with another stretch of motorway, opened 29 May 2008 bypassing Carlow, rejoining the old N9 at Powerstown. Further south, the N9 crosses the River Barrow bypassing Leighlinbridge to the west, and continuing south to pass west of Muine Bheag, then entering County Kilkenny.
