" The first well-known version of anarcho-capitalism was formulated by Austrian School economist and libertarian Murray Rothbard in the mid-twentieth century, synthesizing elements from the Austrian School of economics, classical liberalism, and nineteenth century American individualist anarchists Lysander Spooner and Benjamin Tucker ( rejecting their labor theory of value and the normative implications they derived from it ).

Murray Rothbard said that the difference between free-market capitalism and " state capitalism " is the difference between " peaceful, voluntary exchange " and a collusive partnership between business and government that uses coercion to subvert the free market.

Anarchist theorist Murray Rothbard argued that all government services, including defense, are inefficient because they lack a market-based pricing mechanism regulated by the voluntary decisions of consumers purchasing services that fulfill their highest-priority needs and by investors seeking the most profitable enterprises to invest in.

In the preface to the 1977 English translation Murray Rothbard called " The Production of Security " the " first presentation anywhere in human history of what is now called anarcho-capitalism " though admitting that " Molinari did not use the terminology, and probably would have balked at the name.

Godwin's political views were diverse and do not perfectly agree with any of the ideologies that claim his influence ; writers of the Socialist Standard, organ of the Socialist Party of Great Britain, consider Godwin both an individualist and a communist ; anarcho-capitalist Murray Rothbard did not regard Godwin as being in the individualist camp at all, referring to him as the " founder of communist anarchism "; and historian Albert Weisbord considers him an individualist anarchist without reservation.

By the turn of the 20th century, the heyday of individualist anarchism had passed, although aspects of the individualist anarchist tradition were later revived with modifications by Murray Rothbard and his anarcho-capitalism in the mid-20th century, as a current of the broader libertarian movement.

Some believe that the modern movement of anarcho-capitalism is the result of simply removing the labor theory of value from ideas of the 19th century American individualist anarchists: " Their successors today, such as Murray Rothbard, having abandoned the labor theory of value, describe themselves as anarcho-capitalists.

Murray Rothbard, a student of Ludwig von Mises, combined the Austrian school economics of his teacher with the absolutist views of human rights and rejection of the state he had absorbed from studying the individualist American anarchists of the 19th century such as Lysander Spooner and Benjamin Tucker.

In 1971, Austrian School libertarian economist Murray Rothbard criticized Friedman's efforts to make the government more efficient as detrimental to individual liberty, concluding "... as we examine Milton Friedman ’ s credentials to be the leader of free-market economics, we arrive at the chilling conclusion that it is difficult to consider him a free-market economist at all.

In a 1995 interview in Reason magazine he said the " difference between me and people like Murray Rothbard is that, though I want to know what my ideal is, I think I also have to be willing to discuss changes that are less than ideal so long as they point me in that direction.
