Blacks from Mali, Nigeria and Senegal are mostly Sunnite Muslims, but do not make up more than 1-2 % of the population.

The four schools ( or Madh ' hab ) of Sunni Muslims are each named by students of the classical jurist who taught them.

Fatwās generally contain the details of the scholar's reasoning, typically in response to a particular case, and are considered binding precedent by those Muslims who have bound themselves to that scholar, including future muftis ; mere rulings can be compared to memorandum opinions.

They are issued in response to questions by ordinary Muslims, and go unnoticed by those not concerned, while the much smaller number of fatwā issued on controversial subjects, such as war, jihad, and dhimmis ( particularly by extremist preachers ), sometimes get wide coverage in the media because of their political content ( see examples below ).

In the Qur ' an, Muslims are told that they should never say they will do a particular thing in the future without adding " in sha ' Allah " to the statement.

Below is quoted the story of Jabalah's return to the land of the Byzantines as told by 9th-century historian al-Baladhuri. Jabalah ibn-al-Aiham sided with the Ansar ( Azdi Muslims from Medina ) saying, " You are our brethren and the sons of our fathers " and professed Islam.

The ambassadors probably exaggerated the immediate danger to the empire, which was temporarily stalled by Seljuk infighting ; Alexius also told them to remind them that Jerusalem was also held by Muslims, knowing that western Christians, too, attached a special significance to the city at the centre of the world which Muslims had denied them pilgrimage to.

In 1997 Muslim Brotherhood Supreme Guide Mustafa Mashhur told journalist Khalid Daoud that he thought Egypt's Coptic Christians and Orthodox Jews should pay the long-abandoned jizya poll tax, levied on non-Muslims in exchange for protection from the state, rationalized by the fact that non-Muslims are exempt from military service while it is compulsory for Muslims.
