Despite this turmoil, the 1950s proved a successful era for the club and with a team that included Péter Palotás, Nándor Hidegkuti, Mihály Lantos and József Zakariás, Bukovi guided them to three Hungarian League titles and a Hungarian Cup.

Hidegkuti died on 14 February 2002 after suffering from heart and lung problems for some time before his death.

After a fine save from a very close shot by Nandor Hidegkuti, he was described by the sports reporter Herbert Zimmermann with the words " Toni, you're a football God ".

Playing from deep, Hidegkuti was able to distribute the ball to the other attackers and cause considerable confusion in the English defence.

Despite this turmoil, the 1950s proved a successful era for club and it was while at MTK that Hidegkuti, together with Péter Palotás and coach Márton Bukovi, pioneered the deep lying centre-forward position.

Hidegkuti was used by the Golden Team as a deep lying centre-forward.

Inspired by Hidegkuti, Hungary was level at half time and eventually won, 4-2.
