When the PDSR lost the 1996 elections, Năstase became leader of the opposition PDSR parliamentary group, vice-president of Chamber of Deputies, and member of Standing Bureau and Member of the Romanian delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe where he was the Recording Secretary of Council of Europe commission on judicial problems and human rights with reference to illegal activities by religious sects.

He served as interim prime minister of Romania between December 21 and 28, 2004, when prime minister Adrian Năstase, who had just been defeated in presidential elections by Traian Băsescu, resigned and became President of the Chamber of Deputies.

Ilie Năstase (, born July 19, 1946, in Bucharest, Romania ) is a Romanian former professional tennis player, one of the world's top players of the 1970s.

He also played two more exhibition matches, one facing Goran Ivanišević, while in the other he paired up with Ilie Năstase against the Mansour Bahrami / Yannick Noah pair.

At the end of 1970, a panel of journalists had ranked the best players in the world, and the best thirty-two men based on this ranking were invited to play the 1971 WCT circuit: among these 32 players were Ilie Năstase, Stan Smith, Jan Kodeš, Željko Franulović and Clark Graebner.

At the beginning of his career in 1966 Năstase travelled around the world competing with his good friend Ion Ţiriac.

Năstase won three other tournaments during the second half of the year, the Pepsi Grand Slam, South Orange, and the 4-man tournament of Caracas, Venezuela, in October ( not to be confused with the Caracas WCT tournament in March ), making seven tournament championships for the year.

Maxim magazine has placed Năstase at number 6 on its top ten " Living Sex Legends " list, as he is reputed to have slept with over 2500 women.

Nevertheless, on October 20, she resigned together with Beuran and Şerban Mihailescu, the Secretary General of the Năstase government.

After the victory of the PDSR in the 2000 legislative elections and the re-election of Ion Iliescu as President of Romania, Năstase was elected president of the PDSR, which soon changed its name to the Social Democratic Party ( PSD ) after merging with another party.

Năstase later attributed his surprise defeat to a number of factors, including what he characterized as a failure of Humanist Party politicians to campaign on his behalf ( the Humanist Party had an electoral pact with the PSD at the time ); and the endorsement of Băsescu by Greater Romania Party ( PRM ) leader Corneliu Vadim Tudor.

General election were held in Romania on 28 November 2004, with a second round of the presidential election on 12 December between Prime Minister Adrian Năstase of the ruling Social Democratic Party of Romania ( PSD ) and Traian Băsescu of the opposition Justice and Truth Alliance.

It is worth quoting what Băsescu ( from the Democratic Party ) remarked rhetorically in a live TV debate with Adrian Năstase ( from the Social Democratic Party ) before the 2004 run-off presidential election:

Năstase was the World No. 1 tennis player between 1973 ( August 23 ) and 1974 ( June 2 ).

During the remainder of his career, Năstase steadily declined and only occasionally defeated a good player, such as Johan Kriek in the third round of the 1982 US Open.

In singles, Năstase won his first tournament at Cannes on April 16, 1967.

With Tiriac, Năstase won the men's doubles title at the French Open.

In 1971, Năstase was the runner-up at the French Open.

In December at the year end tour finals, Năstase took revenge against Smith winning his second consecutive Masters Grand Prix title.

By winning 17 tournaments, including the French Open, a doubles title at Wimbledon, a third Masters title, Năstase was the undisputed World No. 1 that year.

Năstase retired from the tour in October 1985 at the age of 39 after playing in the tournament in Toulouse, although he did play the challenger tournament at Dijon in June 1988.

Năstase met Amalia at a Sting concert and married her in a Greek Orthodox ceremony on June 5, 2004 followed by a Civil ceremony in July of the same year.

Năstase claimed the sentence was influenced by rival politician Traian Băsescu, at the time President of Romania, and indicated that if necessary, he will raise his case to the European Courts of Human Rights.

Adrian Năstase finished high school at Nicolae Bălcescu High School ( now Saint Sava National College ) and then graduated from the University of Bucharest, receiving degrees from both the Department of Law and the Department of Sociology.

Năstase remained PSD president until April 2005 when he was replaced as PSD president by former foreign minister Mircea Geoană at a PSD party congress.

When the police arrived at his home to arrest Năstase, he shot himself in the throat in an apparent suicide attempt and was taken to a hospital.

Graebner's most significant title was probably the men's doubles title at the 1966 French Championships, where he and Dennis Ralston beat Ion Ţiriac and Ilie Năstase in the final.
