The Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology, Surat () ( Gujarati: સરદ ા ર વલ ્ લભભ ા ઈ ર ા ષ ્ ટ ્ ર ી ય પ ્ ર ૌ દ ્ ય ો ગ િ ક ી સ ં સ ્ થ ા ન ) also known as NIT Surat or SVNIT, is a public engineering institution of higher education established by the Government of India in 1961.

NIT Surat was established to train scientists and engineers to cater to the country's growing need for R & D and technological manpower.

The students and alumni of NIT Surat are informally referred to as SVNITians.

Organisational structure of the NIT Surat

NIT Surat shares a common Visitor ( a position held by the President of India ) and the NIT Council with other NITs who is the most powerful person in the NIT organizational structure.

NIT Surat receives funding from Government of India of Rs. 500 million per year.

NIT Surat subsidizes undergraduate student fees by approximately 80 % and provide scholarships to all M. Tech.

The academic policies of NIT Surat are decided by its senate. It consists of all professors of the institute, and administrative and student representatives.

NIT Surat follows the credit-based system of performance evaluation, with proportional weighting of courses based on their importance.

NIT Surat has nine academic departments in addition to laboratories and central research facilities.

Admission to most undergraduate and postgraduate courses in NIT Surat is granted through written entrance examinations.

In 2007, through NIT Bill, the Indian government declared these schools as Institute of National Importance.

With the passing of the National Institutes of Technology Act in May 2007, NIT Calicut was declared an Institute of National Importance.

Under legendary coach Don Kennedy, the men's team gained national attention by defeating heavily favored and nationally ranked Duke University in the 1968 NIT quarterfinals, en route to a fourth-place finish.

They made the semifinals of the National Invitation Tournament ( NIT ), where they were defeated by eventual champions University of South Carolina.

The post-season NIT, started in 1938, pre-dates the NCAA Tournament by one year and is second in age only to the NAIA Tournament, which was founded by James Naismith in 1937.

As part of the purchase of the NIT by the NCAA, the MIBA disbanded for the 10-year duration.

One such team was Maryland ; after being rejected by the NCAA selection committee in 2006, head coach Gary Williams announced that 19-11 Maryland would not go to the NIT, only to be told that the university had previously agreed to use Comcast Center as a venue for the NIT.

These changes are intended to encourage participation by good college teams that would rather stay home than play in the NIT – to make it the " Little Dance " instead of the " loser's tournament.

The Director serves under the Board of Governors, and is the school's chief academic and executive officer.
