Nagarjuna asserted a direct connection between, even identity of, dependent origination, selflessness ( anatta ), and emptiness ( śūnyatā ).

Nagarjuna may have arrived at his positions from a desire to achieve a consistent exegesis of the Buddha's doctrine as recorded in the āgamas.
