It is sometimes assumed that the name Ogg comes from the character of Nanny Ogg in Terry Pratchett's Discworld novels, but the Ogg developers say that is not true.

The Ogg format, however, is not named after Nanny Ogg, another Discworld character ; the name is in fact derived from ogging, jargon that arose in the computer game Netrek.

Wyrd Sisters features three witches: Granny Weatherwax ; Nanny Ogg, matriarch of a large tribe of Oggs and owner of the most evil cat in the world ; and Magrat Garlick, the junior witch, who firmly believes in occult jewelry, covens, and bubbling cauldrons, much to the annoyance of the other two.

As Nanny Ogg testifies: " Four ; one under each hoof, I seen em do it.

In Carpe Jugulum, their speech is almost undecipherable and has to be translated by Nanny Ogg ; however by the time they meet Tiffany Aching, they are somewhat more understandable to " bigjobs ".

) Nanny Ogg, for instance, insists that part of her job is to take the first pint of every brewing and the first cake of every baking, to prevent occult forces using them against people.

The main witches in the books are the Lancre Coven: Granny Weatherwax, Nanny Ogg, Magrat Garlick and later Agnes Nitt.

She was the original Maiden in the Lancre coven, which consisted of herself, Granny Weatherwax and Nanny Ogg.

Magrat's gentle personality allows her to serve as a mediator between the often-clashing Granny Weatherwax and Nanny Ogg, but she does occasionally display a strong temper herself.

Although she plays a very minor role in this book, Nanny Ogg notices her potential.

She, Nanny Ogg and Magrat Garlick fended off the vampires who threatened to take over Lancre.

Agnes does not appear in Wintersmith, a story which features Granny Weatherwax and Nanny Ogg, nor does she show up in The Wee Free Men, in which Granny Weatherwax and Nanny Ogg had a cameo.

She knew all the tricks a witch should know, and had mastered the use of stories ; Nanny Ogg said she could be running as many as three of them at once.

Unfortunately, after a while she was unable to distinguish reality from her stories and started going mad — hence the name Black Aliss ( although Granny Weatherwax and Nanny Ogg claim the name arose because she had black teeth and fingernails due to her love of sweets ).

Even though she misspells most words in her letters ( like Nanny Ogg ) and is seen as unintelligent by other witches, she accurately predicts her death ( just like the witch Agnes Nutter, from Good Omens ) and tells Magrat not to let Granny and Nanny go with her because she knew that was the only way they would agree to go.

Famous historic slave rebellions have been led by the Roman slave Spartacus ; the thrall Tunni who rebelled against the Swedish monarch Ongentheow, a rebellion that needed Danish assistance to be quelled ; the poet-prophet Ali bin Muhammad, who led imported east African slaves in Iraq during the Zanj Rebellion against the Abbasid Caliphate in the ninth century ; Granny Nanny of the Maroons who rebelled against the British in Jamaica ; the Haitian Revolution, the only slave revolt which led to the founding of a country ; Denmark Vesey in South Carolina, USA ; and Madison Washington during the Creole case in 19th century America.

Later on, Granny and Nanny reveal to Magrat that the previous fool is actually Tomjon's and Verence II's father.

It could also be said that they each represent a different stereotype of witches: Granny is the classic fairy tale witch, Nanny the village wise woman and Magrat the modern romantic Wiccan.

Granny and Nanny, having identified Agnes as the best candidate for the third member of the Lancre coven, soon arrive and complicate things further.

Aliss trained Nanna Plumb, who trained Goody Heggety, who trained Nanny Gripes, who trained Granny Weatherwax.

The witches Granny Weatherwax and Nanny Ogg visit the Ankh-Morpork Opera House to find Agnes Nitt, a girl from Lancre, and get caught up in a story similar to The Phantom of the Opera.

When Granny Weatherwax realizes Nanny Ogg has written an immensely popular cookbook but has not been paid by the publisher, the witches also leave for Ankh-Morpork to collect the money, as well as to attempt to recruit Agnes into their coven, to replace Magrat Garlick who left the coven when she became Queen of Lancre ( in Lords and Ladies ).

Having discovered the problems at the opera house and also having coerced the publisher to pay Nanny richly for her book, the witches investigate the mystery, with Granny posing as a rich patron, and Nanny insinuating herself into the opera house staff.

(" I learned my craft from Nanny Gripes, who learned it from Goody Heggety, who got it from Nanna Plumb, who was taught it by Black Aliss ..." – Granny, in Lords and Ladies ).

Unlike most ' typical sayings ' in the Folio, it is actually recorded that Granny says this, or at least Nanny Ogg says something very similar when she pretends to be Granny while briefly taking over the role of ... the other one, due to Granny's temporary retirement and Agnes and Count de Magpyr saying or hearing it in their heads whilst under the influence of fragments of her mind, as well as Granny saying it whilst unconscious at exactly the same moment as the count doing so, in Carpe Jugulum.

Known by Francis as ' Nanny Lightfoot ', she would continue to play a key role in the artist's development even after his exile by Captain Bacon.

In Wyrd Sisters she unleashed considerably explosive magic on a cart after losing her temper for nearly being run over by it, and sent the entire nation of Lancre forward in time fifteen years so that the exiled heir to the throne would be of age to liberate the country from its henpecked usurper sooner rather than later, albeit with considerable effort and after much manipulation by Nanny Ogg.

The Shadow King would not resurface until many years later in the body of a deceased FBI agent, Jacob Reisz, at a time when Storm had been reduced back to a child by the Nanny and waking up with amnesia.

Head Nanny Lilian and the other nannies – " Nanny Deb " ( Deborah Carroll ), " Nanny Stella " ( Stella Reid ), and " Nanny Yvonne " ( originally Yvonne Shove, a guest star Jo Frost from " Supernanny " would sub in, later replaced by Yvonne Finnerty for unspecified reasons ; in Season 4 she will not appear due to budgetary reasons ) discuss the clip, whereupon Lilian announces ( based on the major need ; each nanny specializes in one area, such as proper etiquette or controlling temper tantrums ) which nanny will visit the family.

He becomes very close to Nanny and begins to see her as his mother, as his own would constantly neglect him and his father would ignore him.

Nanny Ogg's bath night, as described in the novel Lords and Ladies, is an event feared by the entire population of Lancre, chiefly because she sings any and all of the above songs, accompanied by banjo, whilst bathing, and the tin bath amplifies her already overpowering vocal presence such that the audience is not so much " captive " as " hunted down ".

Two of Nanny Ogg's many children have come to prominence within the novels so far:

For example, when Halloween realizes that Jasmine is not real, he asks Nanny to bring her back to life ( she died in a fight against Fantasia ), and Nanny does so.

Another states that the nickname started by confusion over Manigault's last name ; people thought Manigault referred to himself as Earl Nanny Goat, so he became " The Goat ".

Nicknamed Harvard Hottie by Nanny ( as he attended Harvard ), they begin to gain a rapport, however their relationship almost crumbles when she runs into him and his high school friends, who he doesn't stop when they insinuate that she is only a nanny so she can have affairs with the rich husbands.

In Nanny Returns, it is revealed that he is a con artist, which was how he was able to get so much money.

Lady Lamson-Scribener, an American and the Earl's second wife, is concerned about aging Nanny Collins's abilities and hires Lydia to assist her, particularly after learning that she helped her mother raise 11 children.

The Countess is pleased with Lydia and insists she and baby Ivo go to the park without Nanny Collins when she realizes the older woman has a cold.

Lydia saves the day when she helps prepare a meal for people celebrating the coronation of King Edward VII, and Nanny Collins is upset by the accolades Lydia receives.

After Nanny Simmons attacks Bertie, Hannah sends her down to tell the family that the baby has died but she disappears.

Hugh threatens Lydia's family with eviction from their land, and she asks Nanny Collins for help.

Though Nanny tries to create a good life for her daughter, Leafy is raped by her school teacher and she becomes pregnant with Janie.

Eventually, she runs away leaving Janie with Nanny.

Nanny transfers all the hopes she had for Leafy to Janie.

Nanny concurs that she remembered those days, possibly indicating she also has a very long life span.

1995 saw Eartha Kitt appear as herself in an episode of ' The Nanny ', where she performed a song in French and flirted with Mr Shefield.
